Lead possible bird feeder fragment. A small cast bowl with six broad vertical flutes on its sides and a smooth interior, probably with a rounded base and a projecting flat-topped rim. Patinated. The external surface suggests a decorative feature. Lead objects of this form have also been identified as architectural in function, where they sheathed iron railings or cramps inserted into masonry. There is, however, neither external irregularity nor internal iron staining in this piece, though the round base does not seem apt to the suggested function unless it were to be inserted into a se…

An incomplete Lead Bird Feeder of Medieval to Post-Medieval date (AD 1450-1700). The object is now flattened with damage to the rim. The object has a flat back, to allow it to sit up against a cage, while the front of the feeder would have been rounded. This is evident in the plano-convex shape of the base. A single perforation is present toward the base at the back of the object which would have allowed the bowl to be affixed to the cage. Height: 54.69mm, Width: 80.76mm, …

A partially crushed lead alloy trough for a cage bird. Originally, the trough appears to have been D-shaped in section. The base retains the basic D-shape, albeit in a rather flattened form. The object has a (now crushed) opening at the top. There is a tapering rim below the opening on the curved sides of the trough. This adjoins walls which also taper (but less markedly) towards the base. Between the rim and the walls of the trough, four narrow ribs run horizontally around the curved section. The reverse of the trough is now distorted but appears to have been flat originally. The tro…
