A copper alloy probably Post medieval tube which is hollow and tapering, possibly the nozzle from a set of bellows dating from AD 1600 - 1900. The tube is decorated with a series of circumferential incised lines in groups of two, three or four. There appears to be a division of the tube into three with shallow steps sited about one third and another at two thirds from the end. The wide end may be incomplete. The item has a grey brown patina. It is 127.5mm long; 13.3mm diameter tapering to 8.1mm (hole tapers from 10.5mm to 3.3mm) and weight 67.35g. The function of this object is u…

Iron probable tuyere with copper alloy melt adhering. A cast round-section oval iron object with a central round longitudinal aperture of diameter 15.5mm. The object is shaped like a large lentoid bead at its open end and is possibly narrowed from its midpoint with a circumferential groove. Associated with a group of copper alloy metalworking waste. The blocked end bears parallel grooves in a limited zone. The object was kindly viewed by Dr James Dilley, Experimental Archaeologist at the University of Southampton, who considers that a late date is implied by this detail. This conc…

Probably a portion of the nozzle of a pottery kiln bellows, constructed of low-fired ceramic. Greyish fabric with organic inclusions, probably straw, grass or dung tempering which has been added to the clay, particularly visible on the smeared appearance of the interior or funnel.  The funnel end has a depression with the smeared appearance interior, draining at its base to a narrow circular hole bored through to an irregularly broken end section.  KENT-2BF9B6 shows a similar example and suggests that a wooden tube was fastened to the missing stepped narrow section, enabling …

An incomplete ceramic bellows nozzle or tuyere of Romano-British date. Description: Bellows nozzle of low-fired ceramic. Grey fabric with plentiful traces of organic inclusions, probably straw or dung tempering added to the clay. Crude cylindrical object with narrow bore running throughout its length. One end shows an irregular break; the other end has a stepped narrow section. This is where a wooden tube could be fastened enabling the connection of a pair of bellows. The ceramic nozzle would protect the bellows from direct contact with the fire of the furnace or kiln. Length 200…

A cast and tooled copper alloy nozzle of post medieval to modern date(c. AD 1700 - 1900). Possibly from a hose or set of bellows. The object is a tube with an opening 9 mm diameter at one end, which constricts to 4 mm at the other. The object is generally cylindrical, with two spheriform knobs at the wider end, probably intended to engage with a rubber or canvas hose. There are two encircling ridges at 41 mm and 90 mm. Overall length 134 mm, diameter 18 mm and weight 133 g.

Post-medieval copper alloy bellows nozzle, hollow, circular in cross-section, tapering from end to the other but waisted at mid point, with encircling rib mouldings and engraved grooves, lathe finished. Close to the wider end are three round attachment holes for the tacks, set at 120 degrees of the circumference apart, one is damaged, one is open and the other is filled with iron corrosion from the remnants of the tack. Length 78.8mm. Diameter 21mm (internally 19mm) at the wide end, 9.3mm (4mm internally) at the other.

Copper alloy possible bellows nozzle or tuyere. A cast cylinder with eight longitudinal facets, each ending with a rounded projection; these have all been lightly crimped inwards, probably to secure the object in place. A stamped or incised oval panel appears at the end of each facet, with its upper end formed by these projecting parts. The narrow end has a drilled hole of diameter c.2mm. This retained fine pale grey material, possibly ash. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Length: 55.9mm, Diameter: 20.2mm, Thickness (wall): 1mm, Weight: 12.22gms

Copper alloy Tuyere. Possible Bellows fragment. Cast conical tube fragment, suggested to be a nozzle from a set of bellows; it would be attached at the surviving end to a longer tube of wood, which the metal end would protect from direct contact with fire. The thickness of metal is remarkably consistent, and might suggest machine manufacture or finishing. Suggested date: Modern, 1800-1900. Length: 13.5mm, Diameter: 11.43mm, Thickness of tube at its end: 2.1mm, Weight: 2.13gms.
