An unidentified lead object, perhaps the centre of a wooden ball (for sport), of uncertain date, probably Medieval to Modern, AD 1200 - 1950. It is in the form of three rods joined at the centre to make a three dimensional shape, one rod in each plane. Each of the six projecting prongs is circular in cross-section, and they project roughly at right angles to each other, though some rods are slightly bent. It is 41.7mm long, 41.5mm wide and 40mm thick. 86.16g. It has a well developed white patina. The object is similar in shape to SWYOR-5860B0 which is identified as a caltrop, but…

Stone ball, of a dull dark brown tint. The finder kindly notes the material to be completely alien to the find-spot. While probably naturally formed, perhaps as a fossil sponge, it is probably a manuport from an area such as the North Lincolnshire Ironstone around Scunthorpe, where such objects are naturally abundant. Suggested date (of importation): Unknown, probably Bronze Age to Roman, 2350 BC- AD 410. Diameter: 26.6mm, Weight: 23.40gms

A fragment of a ceramic ball of uncertain function, probably a toy or part of a game set - it could have been the jack in a boules-type game. The outer surface is smooth and appears to have been glazed. It is decorated with a painted set of double parallel lines, forming a grid or check pattern, approximately 11 mm apart. The object represents approximately one quarter of the original sphere. The fragment measures 38.8 mm long, 37.1 mm wide and 15.2 mm thick. It weighs 19.2 g. It is probably of post-medieval to modern date (19th-20th Century).

Limestone fossil ball. Probably a naturally occurring fossil, possibly a sponge. The regularity of the object which prompted its recovery might equally have encouraged its use as an objet trouve in antiquity. There is, however, no evidence for rtificial working. The probability that this object mighty have been worn by use as a toy in antiquity would probably best be gauged by reference to the detailed record of other archaeological discoveries in the immediate vicinity of its find spot. Suggested date (of putative reuse): Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1800. Diameter: 25.1mm,…

The item is a sphere which has developed a dark green patina. The sphere has traces of iron corrosion on its surface, probably due to an iron object corroding whilst touching the object. The surface has intermittent scratches and grooves which are accidentally created, however, not recently.
