A complete, medieval, gilded copper alloy annular brooch with pin in situ dating from AD1200-1400. These were pinned at the neck to fasten two parts of clothing together (Ward-Perkins 1940, 237-75), or used purely decoratively by both men and women. The frame for the brooch is circular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. It is 2.4mm thick and 4.5mm wide. The small stirrup has inturned ends and punched grooves along its edge, with two grooves forming an inverted V at the junction of pin and wrap-around head. An incomplete Medieval copper alloy annular brooch, dating to c AD 1270 to 1350. It is missing its pin. The annular hoop has a pin constriction with the hoop at that point being slightly wider than elsewhere (5.9mm) either side of the short oval section axial rod. On the opposite side of the hoop is small transverse rectangular depression in the hoop, the pin rest. Copper alloy annular brooch fragment. About one third of a narrow band annular brooch of fat lentoid section, ribbed in vermiform style on one side, presumably that side displayed. Abraded. The narrow band annular brooch appears as a diagnostic brooch type in later or ‘Final phase’ furnished Anglo-Saxon burials of the 7th century. The form enjoyed a reflux of popularity in the 13th century, albeit more usually taking the form of smaller and essentially decorative brooches.
