Complete single platform core made from a small nodule of water worn flint. The unworked section of the flint is rounded, and the cortex is weathered and thin with rusty iron streaks from contact with agricultural machinery. One end of the nodule is struck off at an oblique angle by a hammer stone to provide the platform for flake/small blade removals from one face, several rows of these have been struck in sequence; the distal end of the removals must have had a small amount of cortex left on them from the core. The interior of the nodule is excellent quality black flint. As the remov…

An assemblage of 7 incomplete struck flint blades (debitage) representing multiple periods of activity from the Mesolithic to early Neolithic periods c. 9000 BC - 3300 BC. The assemblage is composed of tertiary flakes; all of different shades of opaque black, opaque and translucent grey and translucent yellow. None show evidence of retouch. The largest black flake is hard hammer struck with a pronounced bulb of percussion. The rest are soft hammer struck, narrow blades of suggested Mesolithic to early Neolithic date c. 9000-3300BC.  Two cores were f…

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Levallois core in fresh condition, of mottled grey flint, now lightly patinated a sandy colour. The flint has some linier thermal (frost) cracks within the flint, these are present on both faces though the flint seems quite stable, a small “potlid” thermal fracture has detached on the underside, at the bottom of this damage is a small, light grey patch of a coarse inclusion in the flint, this is the cause of this sub-discoidal thermal fracture at this point. The core has typical hard hammer centripetal flaking to both faces, one steeper than the other in the conventional …

A tertiary struck flake of orange brown flint, possibly a late Neolithic flint tranchet / chisel arrowhead, 30.9mm in length. The object has a triangular plan with short, low angle scaled retouch along both long edges and worked from both faces. A retouched tertiary flake of dark grey brown flint, probably of later Neolithic to Bronze Age date. The flake is trapezoidal with a projecting point on one corner of the distal edge. This edge has short abrupt retouch along its length with what appears to be a small burin removal at the tip of the point to refine it for use as a piercing or engraving tool.

Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Large and almost complete adze, of triangular cross section, in rolled condition. The flint has patinated a dark brown colour with the coarse inclusions now a lighter brown, the edges have crumbled due to the flint re-corticating and turning chalky underneath the brown patination, showing as a white grainular surface. The damage to the cutting edge shows the core of the flint is still intact under the thick chalky degradation and a patch of good quality dark grey flint inside. The flint was likely to have been this colour and condition when the adze was knapped to shape. The flake sc…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A curved flint flake, apparently removed from the cutting end of a Neolithic flaked axehead. The flake appears to represent a corner of the cutting end of the axehead and has a triangular cross section with removal scars on both sides and a concave inner surface which is the break from the tool. the low bulb-of-percussion and feathered ends to the flake suggest this was a deliberate, contemporary removal, probably for sharpening or finishing purposes.

Elongated, tertiary long blade, of mottled mid-grey flint now patinated a sandy yellow colour with a patch towards the proximal end that appears to be unpatinated. Several small chips to the thin edges are recent damage, also showing the original colour of the flint. The high points to the flake scars are abraded, these show an off-white, almost powdery patination below. Proximal end and platform absent; broken at an angle in antiquity. The blade has a meandering medial ridge; when viewed with the point (distal end) upwards, on the right side of the ridge there is a row of percussion …

The lithic is bi-convex in section creating an ovate cross. Both surfaces have covering scaled flaking with the exception of the blade end which has a long-polished section running approximately 1/3 of the length of the object.  The butt end has been blunted and is slightly rounded with a long smooth negative scar extending on one side approximately 1/4 of the length of the object.
