A Medieval bone tuning peg probably dating from AD 1200 - 1500. The tuning peg has a sub-circular sectioned shank with a perforation at one end, through which the instrument string would have passed. At the opposite end the cross-section changes to a sub-rectangular shape approximately 12mm from the end. The tuning peg has a light tan patina and the dimensions are; length 49.9mm, width 7.4mm, thickness 5.9mm and weight 3.0g. LON-9337E9 cites that similar tuning pegs are published in MacGregor (1985:147) and MacGregor, Mainman & Rogers (1999:1978) where they note that a key would h…

A post Medieval cast copper alloy probable musical instrument tuning peg, probably dating to c. AD 1500-1700. The find is a scallop-shaped plate with incised grooves on the convex face, perhaps to afford grip. The concave rear is plain. A protruding shaft from the base of the plate has circumferential grooves resembling screw-head indentations.  The find may have been in contact with iron due to rust deposits in convex face within inner grooves, and on the rear. Overall length 35.5mm; width 21.5 mm; thickness 3.9 mm; weight 5.61g. cf. NLM-C687B…

Copper alloy tuning peg. A rounded plate resembling a squashed trefoil with apical knop, serving as an offset flat handle to turn a short square-section shank which is grooved, with four grooves on opposed faces, the intervening faces being smoothed by wear. The grooves were either to retain or formed by the strings of a musical instrument which this peg would be used to tighten; the handle is polished by handling wear. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1850 Length: 29.5mm, Width: 16.2mm, Thickness (shank): 4.7mm, Weight: 3.62gms

Copper alloy possible tuning peg. Cast round-section shaft, polished or more finely finished towards its expanded oval end, which would function as a handle to turn the key. Other functions including a control knob for machinery or a tap regulating gas supply might also be entertained. Copper alloy possible tuning peg. Trefoil-shaped cast flat plate with an apical knop, with projecting spurs below bevelled on one side, separating the handle from a short cylindrical tapered shank with three bands of screw thread, possibly from the steel strings of an instrument. Painted black on one side. This semi-gloss surface might point to an alternative identification as a gas supply tap handle. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Copper alloy possible tuning peg. Cast D-shaped handle at the end of a slightly tapered shank with two circumferential grooves around its base. If from a musical instrument, the horizontal scarring of the shank may hint at one fitted with steel strings. However, slightly larger objects of similar form are associated with the regulation of domestic gas supply to appliances. Iron possible tuning key. An iron object thickly sheathed with white metal plating, probably to retard its corrosion or to prevent rust staining its setting. A probably rectangular shank is expanded to form a handle of oval form with opposed crescentic indentations. Possibly damaged by heat on one flat side, with resultant exposure of the ferrous metal core. Shank broken below the putative handle. Wrought iron would have the strength for the suggested function, though other metals might be cast to shape more effectively and easily than iron. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 …
