Post Medieval to Modern object, probably the terminal-end part of a fireside companion set tool. It is crudely stylised and is made from sub-rectangular cross-section copper-alloy formed into the upright shape of a horses head and neck. The ears and mane are represented by multiple semi-circular corrugations extending across the full thickness of the piece. Further details are picked out in low-relief decoration on both faces. At the bottom of the neck and in-line with the head a cylindrical knop projects upwards towards the head, partly enclosing the space bounded by the lower head a…

An incomplete possible iron tong of uncertain date. This could possibly be one half of a blacksmiths tongs. The remaining tong is sub-rectangular in form and has a rounded terminal at one end and pointed terminal at the other. The tong is rectangular in cross-section and narrows in width from 18.9mm maximum width to the pointed terminal at 4.3mm in width. The pointed end may have been the handle end. 76.2mm from the rounded terminal the tong widens and there is a pierced aperture. This could possibly have been where it was joined to the other half of this tong. The tong is slightly cu…

An incomplete Post Medieval copper alloy fragment of a pair of tongs. The fragment has an incomplete round shaped terminal, the obverse of which appears to be decorated on one side with regular rectangular shapes which radiate out from the centre. The outer edge of the terminal is uneven and shows signs of red copper corrosion. At the centre of the terminal is a shank or arm, it appears to have been riveted onto the terminal. The arm is shortened and appears to have been broken off at an angle, it measures 20mm in length and is 7mm wide at the centre of the terminal and is 3mm wide at…

Copper alloy fire tongs fragment. Cast concavo-convex plate with a scalloped edge, broken at a constriction at one end and with an integrally cast loop at the other which is screw-threaded within and set at right angles to the plane of the object, so that an inserted shaft would align with it. A series of small nicks runs around the outer side of he loop. An incised pattern on both sides shows that the object represented the fanned tail feathers of a peacock; the lost part presumably comprised the body and head of the bird. Peacock feathers were a decorative motif especially popular a…

Copper alloy probable fire tongs fragment. Cast concavo-convex object in the form of a cockle shell, but with a cylindrical boss with internal screw thread at the top of its concave side. It is suggested this was where one of a pair of shell-shaped terminals was attached to the arm of a pair of dainty tongs from a companion set; this junction would necessarily have been at a sharp kink in the arm or to a lug on that arm. The small size may suggest that decorative appearance outweighed utility in this case. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Height: 31.4mm, Width: 33.8mm, Thi…
