A worn and abraded stone vessel or miniature religious object of probable 13th century date, possibly a laver or portable holy water stoup/benitier. Description: The object is carved from a solid gritty cream coloured limestone, probably marquise oolite, with a roughly octagonal shape in plan. On the outside of the object, on each face of the octagon is a square decorative panel. Each panel is decorated with alternating three towered castles and a single fleur de lis carved in high relief. The castles' detail is picked out, including brickwork, battlements, a window…

A holy water stoup made of an unidentifed stone and removed from its original location. The stoup weighs c. 25kg and measures 160mm high with the circular well in the centre being c. 270mm diameter (dimensions from the finder). The stoup is broadly oval in plan with two carved vertical 'handles' or linear projections on opposing ends, and what appears to be chevron-shaped carved decoration on one (possible both) sides. The stone has a reddish hue and is probably local. Holy water stoups are dated from the Medieval period and would have stood by the entrance to the church and contained…

Greisen holy water stoup, sub-square in plan with a circular reservoir and rectangular in profile. There is slight damage to one edge of the rim of the stoop, but otherwise it is in good condition considering it was found under the tarmac of a road. These holy water stoups are locally dated from the Later Medieval period and would have stood by the entrance to the church and contained holy water to be used to make the sign of the cross as the faithful entered in. This stoup was found down the road from the church of St Gothians, Gwithian, where it might have been used, before perha…

White metal and lead alloy with tin plating, stoup. Cast plate representing Christ carrying the Cross in low relief. A separately moulded semi-circular lead alloy vessel with scalloped edge and ribbed sides is soldered to the plate. This would be a receptacle for holy water, customarily positioned at the door of a house so that occupants or visitors might bless themselves in passing. This custom was favoured by Roman Catholics, some of whom - especially Irish Catholics - keep up the custom to this day. The image of Christ carrying the Cross is one of the stages of His Passion, present…

A Medieval stone (sandstone) decorative carving, Professor Rosemary Cramp suggests it is a fragment of a holy water stoup or piscina(11th-12th century). The fragment is curved and includes the upper finished edge. The internal diameter of the complete object would have measured approximately 60mm and about 30 percent of the total diameter remains. The outer surface has been decorated with carved three-dimensional figures in high relief, the figures represent apostles or saintly figures. Fragments of two figures remain and they are different. Both are bearded with simple lentoid eyes an…
