The larger of the two terminals contains an incised circle, containing within a cross forming four quarters. There is an incised pellet on the exterior edge of each quarter. These objects – whether misidentified or not – appear unusually commonly in rural contexts where collecting has been indiscriminate. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900

A fragment of a lead printing press block of probable post-medieval to modern date (c.1850-1950).
Description: The object is sub-rectangular in plan and cross-section with one surviving original edge, which would correspond to the right hand edge of the printed text. The text is raised on the upper face in segments of eight rows. The type face is with serifs. Some letters have been scratched out accidentally. The reverse is blank apart from a ridge approximately 2mm wide running parallel to the surviving edge, approximately 10.6mm from it. The fragment re…

An incomplete Post Medieval- Modern lead printing press block dating from AD 1850-1950. The text is raised on the upper face in segments of six rows. This is probably a text on the Battle of Auray which took place on the 29th September 1364 at the Breton-French town of Auray. This battle was the decisive confrontation of the Breton War of Succession, a part of the Hundred Years' War. In the battle, which began as a siege, a Breton army, led by Duke John de Montfort, assisted by English forces commanded by John Chandos, opposed a Breton army led by his …

Probably a Post Medieval lead or lead alloy potter's stamp. It is cylindrical in form. One end of the cylinder has been inscribed with a reversed R B within a circumferal border. Though similar in style to the stamps on post Medieval pipes, it is too large for that so it is probably a potter's, rather than pipe maker's, stamp. It would have been pressed into the clay near or on the base of a pot before it is dried ready for firing. Suggested dates c1500 to c1900 AD, probably c1600 to c1750 AD.
Length 48mm, diameter 14mm, and weight 72.69g.

Lead alloy printer’s type. Cast rectangular block, with a central groove running between its longer edges on one side, and with a D-shaped arrangement of sixteen tiny conical points, of maximum length 2mm. A pair of drilled holes also appear on the plate, perhaps assisting its setting in a row. This block may have been intended to produce a capital letter D, or possibly contributed to an ornamental motif. Traces of a black coating appear on the grooved side, which is also encrusted. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900

Lead alloy die stamp. A cuboid block of heavy grey metal with the reserved image of a horseman on one rectangular face. A clear impression was not obtained, but the subject would appear to be a mounted and bewigged general on spirited horse and brandishing his marshal’s baton: the topic appears widely from the 17th century as part of the iconography of ‘the Age of Kings’; as on the Great Seal of England; later, Frederick the Great of Prussia was often depicted thus, as were other dignitaries seeking to emulate or evoke his martial prowess. Presumably from an educational printing…

Eleven Modern lead alloy (hot metal) lower case letters from 'Doves type' dating from AD 1900-1917. The lower-case letters present are ‘a, f, i, t and v’ and upper-case letter ‘L’. All letters are made of type-metal (hot metal) and were produced in only one size: ‘two-line Brevier’ (equivalent to 16 pt). The type was commissioned by T.J. Cobden-Sanderson in 1899 to print books at the Doves Bindery in Hammersmith, London. Edward Prince cut the punches and struck the matrices for the Doves type. Both the punches and matrices are one-off masters of each character.

A lead alloy possible stamp of uncertain date.
The object has a thick circular disc (rectangular in cross section) from the back of which projects a sub-square lug. The open surface of the thick circular disc has a deeply cast design consisting of a cross with quadrant cells in each quarter. If used as a stamp the cross and the cells would be raised. The lug projecting from the back of the dis is initially sub-square in cross section with slightly rounded corners. Two opposite sides begin to narrow from about half way down its length to the the end in a soft rounded point such th…

Copper alloy stamp. Cast circular die stamp with an image and legend appearing on a sunken panel, representing the reverse of a half-guinea of 1788, with a crowned spade-shaped shield and complete and dated circumferential legend. There is a short [10mm] round-section handle projecting from the back. However, and unlike a seal matrix, the image and legend are legible rather than reversed, so an impression would not be serviceable unless appearing on the reverse of a malleable surface struck against it. It is suggested this object may be intended for the striking of base metal counters…
