Early Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy perforated domed or 'bee-hive' object, probably a masonry plug, or possibly a weight. It is circular in plan, sub-rectangular in section, and a truncated cone overall form. The central perforation has an internal groove that runs from top to bottom. The size of the diameter, 11mm, suggests the object probably intended to placed on a shaft of some sort. Similar obects are often speculativly called Early Medieval spindle whorls, but the presence of the internal groove suggests this may have been used as an end weight on some so…

Thin, narrow plug, with a round main body of around 23mm in length, with an added 16mm of added length which is thinner and flatter (3.5 mm in thickness.) The object's main body is a round-edged rectangle in cross-section, sloping towards one end. Towards the other end, sloping upwards and thickening, the object reaches a point and begins to thin, and a flatter area begins, slightly at an angle to the shape of the main body. The two ends of the object are both roughly rounded. The object has an orange-brown patina with some shiny areas.

A complete lead alloy plug or vessel mend of uncertain date. In plan the plug has a plano-convex body and on the reverse a short round-necked integrally cast shank with flattened discoidal head. This section would have plugged the hole in a vessel wall (if that is its use). If so then this was a substantial vessel (or the like). Possibly Roman but also possible medieval / post-medieval. The latter seems more likely.

Lead plug. Cast object, perhaps of conical form with a rounded smooth inner surface and tapered or distorted internal diameter of circa 15.5 to 13.7mm. This object may represent the pouring of lead to prevent an iron object set into stone - e.g. a masonry cramp or railing - from splitting the stone as it expands as it corrodes. The object is torn or distorted and patinated overall. Suggested date: Possibly Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Height: 17.5mm, Thickness (wall): circa 5mm, Width: 28mm, Weight: 27.82gms.

A cylindrical lead plug or stopper. It weighs 20g, is 33mm long, and has a diameter of ??. The plug has a smooth, cylindrical body, with a rounded tip and a splayed head where it has been flattened out, presumably to seal the fit in a bottle of vessel. Unlike more ad hoc 'potmenders' this example seems to have been manufactured to meet specific formal and proportional requirements, such that it might stop the neck of a bottle or similar. It could date to any period between the Roman and modern eras.

A copper-alloy plug repair for a copper-alloy vessel. The object consists of a strip of copper-alloy, which would have been passed through a break in a vessel and then folded to seal the break on both sides. The object is 21 mm long and 11.2 mm wide. It is probably medieval to post-medieval in date.

Two copper-alloy plugs for repairing metal vessels. The items consist of bent strips of copper-alloy that were slipped inside the break of a vessel and then flattened so as to seal the break. This works in much the same way that lead plugs were used to seal ceramic pots and jars. These artefacts are probably medieval to post-medieval in date. The items are 21 mm long and 11 mm wide, and 18 mm long and 16 mm wide respectively.
