A fragment (consisting of roughly one sixth) of a Roman Augustine Harp pattern Millstone dating to AD 300- 410. Possibly from Eiffel, West Germany and made of volcanic pumice-like dark grey stone with cross piece rigid. The fragment measures 450mm in length and is 370mm at its widest point, being 60mm thick. There is a square cut through from the back to 44.5mm thickness, placed at 210mm from one end and 195mm from the other along the longest side. The fragment of millstone weighs 28lbs or 12.6 kg. A second fragment of roughly the same dimension and found to fit alongside the ori…

A small millstone or large rotary quern stone of uncertain date (Late Iron Age - Medieval) however, possibly thought to be a later medieval date (AD 1250-1600). The stone is incomplete being broadly oval in plan and D shaped in cross section. Significant stone is lost around the edges due to fracturing possibly through heat (there are blackened sooted marks in places) or frost action. The upper surface has a rough pecked surface; this has been created by cold chisel working creating a rough and regular pattern. This working extends into the central hole which is oval in shape. The hol…

A complete limestone rotary millstone of unknown date. It is circular in shape with a small circular 'eye' in the centre. The griding surface is dressed with fine parallel grooves arranged in groups ('harps') radiating out from the centre at slightly different angles to enhance the griding process. There is a small amount of damage to the outer edges of both faces.

Described from a photograph. Probably medieval incomplete lavastone millstone, about half surviving. Broken across a central rectangular hole, with a smaller rectangular hole or deep indentation next to it, the visible surface covered with multiple irregular radiating, curving grooves. A 30cm ruler used as a scale in the photograph indicates the stone's surviving measurements are circa 350 x 580mm.

Fragment of the outer edge of a lava millstone with radial grooves on the grinding face. Diameter c.700mm. Maximum thickness 45mm. Weight 1.448kg. Pot sherds from the immediate area of this find suggest medieval settlement, and there is no reason to suggest that it does not also date to the Middle Ages.

A limestone millstone, incomplete and probably dating to the Roman period. The millstone has a raised, almost domed, central perforation and a worked upper suface; the surface is still quite rough suggesting that the stone experienced minimal usage (if any) as continuous grinding would result in areas of the stone being smooth. The underside of the stone is very rough and has had minimal working. A large part of one side of the millstone is missing making it unusable; this broken edge may have occured during or soon after manufacture and this may explain why there is no evidence of pr…
