A late Medieval to Post Medieval handmade copper alloy lace tag, c.AD 1400-1800.
Formed from a single piece of 1mm sheet by rolling into a cone shape, leaving an open end and a closed sharp pointed end. The open-end has a protruding rectangular section of the plate above, that appears to have a 'punch mark' on the reverse and is slightly bent forward. Possibly a means of securing the cord / leather to the chape. A very neat butt soldered joint runs the length of the tag. The surface displays a patchy green patina.

A copper alloy Post Medieval lace tag, or perhaps an unusually plain medieval needle case. If it is a lace-tag, it dates from AD 1400 - 1700. It is cylindrical, made from a thin sheet of copper alloy which has been rolled into a narrow tube, tapering towards one end, with a single, edge to edge seam where the ends of the sheeet meet. The closed end has one end of the tube folded over to close the end. There is no evidence of attachment. It is 89.9mm long, 7.9mm in diameter at the wider end, tapering to 4mm, and weighs 10.17g. The length is greater than the us…

Copper alloy lace end / lace tage / lace chape of Post Medieval date (AD 1600-1750). It is formed from a rectangle of rolled copper alloy sheet to form a tubular slightly tapering cylindrical cap or chape. The seam has five teeth on either side and runs vertcially down the reverse, and an indented vertical line running down its opposite side. There are two small pointed prongs at the base of the chape. Complete medieval probable lace tag. It is exceptionally long at 96.5mm. It consists of a strip of sheet metal rolled into a cylinder and now differentially flattened: both ends are equally flat but in between its cross-section varies in degrees of ovality). It is broadly straight, exhibiting only a very minor lateral curve. Both of these attributes are most probably a result of distortion. It tapers minimally in width from one end to the other. The two edges of the sheet do not overlap but meet at an irregular (not straight) seam that runs the full length. About six mil…

Medieval copper-alloy lace tag or aiglet. It is complete except for one or two small missing fragments at and near the open attachment end and a generalised but patchy loss of surface due to abrasion. It is circular in cross-section and tapers uniformly to a point at the tip. It has a closed longitudinal seam which twists a little less than ninety degrees around the tag as it extends from the attachment end to about three-quarters of the way to the tip. Somewhere between here and the tip it terminates, but the precise point this occurs is not clearly perceptible. At the attachment…

Copper alloy probable lace end. A sheet metal tapered cylinder with butted seam, turned sharply to form a pointed hook at its narrow solid end. The diameter of the cylinder at its open end would probably commend a function as a lace end to fasten a garment rather than as a boot-button hook, for which purpose this handle seems too slender. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700
