A fragment of a copper-alloy Girdle Hanger or symbolic key dating to the Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) period, c. 480-570AD. The bottom of the shaft and part of E-shaped terminal are preserved. It is decorated with transverse grooves and ring and dot motif. Fragment of early Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy girdle-hanger. Using Felder's terminology (2014, 35, fig. 3.1), the fragment consists of the suspension loop, shank neck and part of shank, with a granular, unworn break. The suspension loop is a narrow, rounded lobe at the top, pierced from side to side, but the perforation is now blocked with iron corrosion. The shank neck is a D-section area below the suspension loop, divided into five rounded lobes; its junction with the shank is marked with a transverse ridge. The shank itself is rectangular-section and flares very slightly …

Copper alloy girdle hanger. Cast E-shaped plate with slightly concave outer edges and a longer central stalk, broken at its upper end. A series of semi-circular stamps, each arc enclosing a dot and so resembling halved ring-and-dot, passes along the outer borders of the central stalk, follows the edges of the troughs on either side, and ascends the inner side of the outer elements. The series also runs intermittently on the outer sides of the latter. Extensive traces of white metal plating were observed during image processing. The girdle hanger was part of an object suite associated w…

Copper alloy girdle hanger. Cast lower part or ‘bit’ of a girdle-hanger, a non-functional or symbolic key worn suspended from the waist as part of the object kit associated with the Anglian burial costume of an adult woman. The object is now of E-shaped form, with the lost central stem represented by a central shorter member which is broken. The lack of decoration is a little unusual and might hint at a piece made for the purpose of equipping a burial, rather than one worn and cherished in life. Corrosion on the rougher side might preserve traces of textile against which th…
