An incomplete Box Iron or slug iron of Post Medieval date (c. AD 1700-1900). The iron consists of a triangular shaped, solid brick of iron known as the 'slug'. The tip of the triangle has been squared off. This brick would have been heated in the fire and placed into a hollow ironing box, in order to keep the iron hot for longer, as opposed to the earlier simple 'flat irons'. This is a variation on earlier Box Irons, which were typically filled with charcoal in order to keep them hot. The development of the 'slug', allowed the ironing surface to be kept away from the charcoal and thus…

On the wider base end there is the remains of a lifting hole. This brick would have been heated in the fire and placed into a hollow ironing box, in order to keep the iron hot for longer, as opposed to the earlier simple 'flat irons'. A cast iron "slug" from a box iron for use on laundry, dating from about AD 1800 - 1930. The object is shield shaped in plan with a flat top, curved sides and a sharply pointed base. It is rectangular in section. The surface of the object has undergone some corrosion and a layer has partially flaked away so that any markings that may have been present are no longer visible; the object is otherwise in good condition. It is 63.9mm long, 39.6mm wide and 15.9mm thick. It weighs 122.32gm (4.31oz). It has a dark brown patina. Compare another iron weight: SF-6A6240. See https://www.obj…

Copper alloy, painted, iron stand. Shoe-shaped plate with a triangular platform and oval-ended handle; three round section pins of diameter 8.3mm and length 30mm (one lost) were set in round holes with edges lightly countersunk on the upper side of the plate. Jennifer Dunne, Collections Assistant (Social History) for NorthLincolnshireMuseum, kindly confirms the opinion of the finder that this is probably an iron stand for the temporary storage of a heated flat iron, and comments it may be for a small iron used for specialised tasks or unusually shaped objects such as hats. Paint survi…
