Post Medieval to Modern silver eyelet in the form of a six-petalled flower. It is domed in profile. On the rear there is a stubby projection with a broken tab attached to it. The form of this tab and the uniform finish of the outer face indicate that the eyelet is the product of fairly recent manufacture. It is quite worn and the projection and tab may be part of a repair. Suggested date range c1850 to c1910 AD, but it could be more recent. Length 10mm, width 11mm, weight 0.9g.

A copper alloy metal artefact of uncertain date, but probably from the post medieval to modern period,  AD 1700- 1900. The object appears to be an eyelet or grommet made from copper alloy, with a textile washer or from a textile object with some leather or cloth surviving. The object is a disc with a large central circular hole. On the front face there is a raised rim round the hole, which is of 13.6mm diameter. Beyond the internal rim, the front face slopes slightly down towards the edge and is decorated with  a single line groove border. On the reverse, the metal forming th…

Copper alloy eyelet fragment. A tattered pressed metal concavo-convex ring with a central aperture of diameter 8mm; probably from a garment, as decorative beaded vegetal trails appear on the display face, though such objects might equally be expected along the edges of a tarpaulin. The concave area of the front face, between these two borders is decorated with radiating raised lines. There are six circular holes spaced equally among the ribs. A small, cast copper alloy ring of probable Medieval dating (AD 1150 to AD 1450). There is surface decoration in the form of radiating grooves, some of which appear black, suggesting that the ring itself may once have been painted. It has a diameter of 11.4 mm and is1.3 mm thick. it weighs 0.2 g. The function of the ring is unclear as it is too small for a finger ring and there is no evidence of a pin to suggest its use as a buckle. It probably functioned as an eyelet for fastening clothing. An object of similar circumference and general appearance is shown in Dress Access…

A medieval, lead alloy eyelet mount, probably dating to the 14th-15th century. The mount is of flat, sexfoil design, with a central hole (3mm dia.) and integral flanged rivet moulded on the reverse. The following is taken from reference: 'These were mainly used as surrounds for buckle pin holes in straps or lace holes in other items, although some may have been purely decorative. They were presumably attached whilst the leather was temporarily softened, perhaps by steam or by boiling.' A similar example is given at Dress Accessories No. 1226 Weight: 0.4g, Thickness: 2.5mm, Diameter…

A Post Medieval Silver dress component, probably an eyelet dating from about AD 1500 - 1600. The probable eyelet is pentagonal in plan. Each point is moulded on the obverse into a simple fleur-de-lis. The sides of the eyelet are concave, and in the centre of each one, on the front face, is a moulded pellet. There is a circular hole in the centre of the object, of 2.3mm diameter. This hole is actually a short tube, the back end of which flares outwards to form a backplate. A separate silver washer or rove is held sandwiched between the two plates, around the grommet, along with a small…

A silver-gilt composite object, possibly a dress accessory or a component of one. It is made of two discs, with circular central apertures, and appears to be joined by a silver grommet. There is a small space between the two inner surfaces of the discs. The outer surface of both, between the outer circumference and the aperture, is crimped to create a series of six petals in a floral effect; the overall impression is of a small rose. The surfaces are worn, with the silver showing through in several places. Tiny traces of a white substance, possibly enamel, are retained in the deeper g

Copper alloy eyelet. Cast circular loop with a bevelled internal edge and an integrally cast tapered rectangular section shank with a blunt point. Opposed sides of the shank are feathered with three incised steps to improve the grip of the object when hammered into wood; an identical form is seen on modern nails used to fasten wooden pallets together. The execution of the feathered edges was probably by hand, suggesting manufacture in a craft rather than an industrial setting. The top of the loop is dented and the shank slightly bent, suggesting it has been used as outlined above. Sug…
