Lead bullet. Pointed rifle bullet with a circumferential groove towards its base and five angled vertical ribs to ensure a snug fit between the bullet and its cartridge case [lost]. White material appears in the base of the bullet. The diameter shows this to be a 0.303in round, a military issue and calibre used for the infantryman’s rifle and for machine guns, including those arming aircraft, and loss or use in wartime is possible, perhaps most likely in the context of military practice. The finder kindly notes that others have been found in the vicinity. Suggested date: Modern, …

Incomplete Modern cast lead bullet, c.AD 1900-1950. This is a solid, cylindrical, round-nosed bullet with two circumferential rings around its base. Patinated. Probably for use with a revolver of 0.35 inch calibre, though a 9mm diameter might also point to a round for the Sten gun, which was designed to use captured German 9mm calibre ammunition, and which might have found its way into the hands of the Home Guard later in the Second World War.

Incomplete Post Medieval-Modern cast lead bullet, c.AD 1870-1900. This is a solid cast rifle bullet with two rifling grooves, a pointed tip, and a flat solid base. The diameter of this bullet matches the ammunition used for a rifle of 0.50 inch bore, presumably a weapon of military specification. This was most likely used for individual firing practice from the beach.

Lead bullet. Cast round-nosed bullet with a basal circumferential ring on its outer surface and a hollow 4mm deep at its base. A red tint overall may suggest a copper-jacketed round. The basal hollow is a feature of rounds made for early versions of the Martini Henri rifle, where it was occupied by a ceramic plug, although this reporter would deem this a slightly lighter bullet than is usually identified as such – probably of 0.45 inch calibre. This might indicate either sporting shooting or an episode of practice by a Volunteer or Militia member in the later 19th century. Sugges…

Lead probable bullet. Cast conical round-nosed bullet with a basal hollow of depth 15mm. Patinated, with a splayed basal skirt. The mass and size and basal hollow may relate this to early bullets for the Enfield Snyder rifle which was brought into military service from 1866; the hollow contained a ceramic plug which would be lost at the time of firing. The discovery of fired rounds in a rural setting might relate to the equipment or practice of Volunteer forces raised in the later 19th century for home defence. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1870-1900 Length: 29.7mm, Diameter: 16.7mm,…

A complete Post Medieval-Modern cast lead alloy pellet, c.AD 1800-1950. This object has a rounded tip and a flattened end, probably caused by a blow, and has broken in half across the middle. This break has exposed a hollow centre, now filled with dirt. There are four raised bands around the main body, closer to the tip than the flattened end. This shape is typical of lead bullets used in rifles, from the 19th century through to the mid 20th century.

A Post Medieval cast lead bullet dating from AD 1853-1880. The bullet is cast and conical, slightly flattened on the tip. The bullet has three circumferential rings of rifling and a deep basal hollow, this is most probably from a Martini Henry rifle which equipped British troops in the second half of the 19thcentury.  Dimensions: diameter: 14.57mm; height: 25.99mm; weight: 30.10g Peter Hart kindly writes "Bullets of the 0.577" calibre were introduced around 1853. The excavated example may still have the remains of a clay or wooden plug in the skirt of th…
