A fragment of a silver early medieval penny of Harthacnut (1035-42) during his joint reign with Harold I (1035-40); Jewel Cross type (North 809) dating to the late 1030s (see below); mint: Winchcombe (possibly)/Ilchester (possibly). Ref: North 1994: 171. Obverse: diademed bust, right, HARĐA[CNVT R]. Reverse cross composed of four ovals united at their base by two circles enclosing a pellet, [...](I or N) CEL:. The longer break across the coin is rough but straight, and relatively central indicating that the coin may have circulated as a cut halfpenny.
