Silver coin. Penny of Stephen (1135-1154), possibly Stafford mint (Spink 2017 page 147: Anglo-Saxon and Norman mints) or London [see reverse reading], profile right, assertively cleaned by the finder.
Obverse description: crowned bust right with lis-topped sceptre before face, star of seven points with central pit in lower right flan.

Reverse description: cross within eight arched tressure, a lis pointing inwards in each angle, plain line inner and outer circles.

A modern imitation of a medieval silver penny of William I (1066-1089), Pax type (North 858-50). The reverse inscription reads STAMFORD CASTLE rather than giiving a mint and moneyer and the weight is too high for an official, medieval issue. It can probably be considered a tourist/re-enactment piece of the late 20th-early 21st century

A silver penny of Aethelred II, Second Hand type, c.985-991 AD. As North, 1980: no. 768. EMC 2019.0060. Dr Martin Allen has identified this coin as an issue of the moneyer Sigewulf (new name variant) at the mint of Stafford-a new mint for the Second Hand type.
