A complete Post Medieval copper alloy eight maravedis of Philip IV (AD 1621-1665) dated AD1655. It is probably a 'resellado' (which means 'resealed' or 'restruck') of Philip III (AD 1598-1621), being restruck during the reign of Philip IV (AD 1621-1665). It is unclear which side is the obverse, but the likely obverse is stamped IIII (probably the restruck impression) and the likely reverse reads 1655 (again, probably the restruck impression). As a parallel record (SOM-04B156) states: these are often called 'cob' coins after the Spanish word for copper which is 'cobre': they were cr…

A complete post medieval copper alloy eight maravedis 'resellado' (which means 'resealed' or 'restruck') of Philip III (AD 1598-1621) or Philip IV (AD 1621-1665). The coin has been countermarked so that the original denomination is difficult to determine. There is a VIII counterstamp (pertaining to the denomination) on one side over the top of a shield, and the counterstamp on the other side appears to be a rampant lion inside a shield over the top of a similar design. There is no indication of a year, but it was probably countermarked and revalued/revalidated during the reign of Phil…

A copper alloy post-medieval Spanish maravedis resellado (resealed or restruck) of probably Philip IV (1621-65). It is exceedingly worn with perhaps the trace of a shield on one face, S below, and countermarked on the other face with a VI and a II, each in a circular stamp. There is a small c below the VI and there is possibly an additional I after II. The S suggests the coin was originally struck at the Segovia or the Sevilla mint, and its size suggests it was originally an 8-maravedis.

Clipped copper alloy 8 maravedis of Felipe III (1598-1621) of Spain, dated to 1611 on reverse, but countermarked later in under Felipe IV's reign (1621-1665) as an 8 maravedis 'resellado' which means 'resealed' or 'restruck'. The coin has the mark 'R X' on the obverse for REX and the various '8' or 'VIII' stamps refer to the denomination of the coin. There may have been, just above the RX mark, another countermark which could have indicated the year of countermarking, probably in the 1650s. A parallel from Cornwall is recorded under CORN-E4EC33.

A post medieval copper alloy Spanish 8 Maravedis coin dating to AD1621-1665. This type of coin has heavily counter marked, making it difficult to discern the original decoration. The obverse depicts a rectangular design within a beaded circle. The date 1651 is stamped to the top left with a circular stamp containing a crowned 64. Along the bottom edge and below the beading are the numerals XIII, though only half is still visible due to damage.
