Copper alloy possible stylus. Cast round section rod with a moulded point at one end, flat at the other. The form closely resembles that of both lead dry-points of medieval date and the similar lead pencils for schoolroom use which are of later post-medieval date. Late Roman finds are prominent in the vicinity, so this may be a fragment wjhich has lost the spatulate eraser usually associated with Rpman styli. Other finds from the vicinity are of mainly Roman date, though with later material present. Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast globular or bun-shaped whorl with opposed flat sides and with a slightly off-centre square moulded aperture of c.8mm square; patinated, with a cut by the hole on one side which might represent a tying notch. The thick patina points to an object of some age. If indeed a whorl – the square hole would be an aberrant feature – the spindle hole size would fall between the ranges accepted for earlier and later parts of the early medieval period.
