Silver Denarius of Pescennius Niger (AD 193-4) (Reece Period 10), VICTOR[IAE AVG?], Victory advancing right with wreath and palm. Mint of Antioch. RIC IV, pt 1, p. 37 86var. The coin recorded in RIC has a different obverse legend, and Victory is standing right. However, a similar coin was sold at Spink, October 1st 2009, Sale 9026, Lot 1038. This is the first official coin of Pescennius Niger to be recorded on the PAS Database. Diam 16.28mm, Thickness 1.750mm, Weight 2.2g

A modern 'fantasy coin' of Roman emperor Pescennius Niger on obverse, and a Greek style tetradrachm on the reverse, possibly of Miletos or Babylon. Coins of Pescennius Niger are very rare in the UK. This coin has a very thick flan, and the metal is of unusual colour and quality, although it is likely to be a kind of copper alloy.
