An incomplete and somewhat worn base silver (billon) bawbee of Mary I of Scotland (Mary, Queen of Scots) dating c. 1542-1558. Obverse: crowned thistle flanked by cipher M R, +[MA]RIA D G REGINA SCOTORV. Reverse: St Andrews cross with crown at centre flanked by cinquefoils, [OP]PIDVM ED[INB]VRGI. Mint of Edinburgh. Seaby 5432. Part of the coin has broken away in old damage, coincident with a deep crack that runs into its centre.

A post medieval copper alloy Lion or Billon Hardhead of Mary I of Scotland and Francis II of France (AD 1558-1560). The obverse depicts the initials MF, intertwined and surmounted by a crown. Either side of the initials would have been a dolphin. The inscription would have read [(FR).ET.MA.D.G.R.R.SCOT.D.D] VIEN. Identifying Francis and Maria as King and Queen of Scotland and Dauphins of Vienna. The reverse depicts a crowned lion. The inscription would have read [VICIT. VERITAS. year]. A post medieval Scottish billon bawbee of Mary I of Scotland (1542-67); first period, before marriage (1542-58); mint: Edinburgh; Spink S5433. The coin has been pierced from obverse to reverse between the inner circle and 'M' next to central thistle creating a small hole, perhaps to enable its use as a pendant.
