A fragment of an Early Medieval coin: a silver penny. Less than quarter of the coin survives, so identification is not at all certain, but it is possibly a penny of Edward the Elder (AD 899 - 924), Portrait type, moneyer Framwis. North (1994) Volume 1 number 651 on page 127. It is 10.2mm long, 8mm wide and 0.7mm thick. It weighs 0.23g.

A modern copy of an Early Medieval silver halfpenny of Edward the Elder (899-924), based upon Norrth 660 (floral penny) albeit seemingly intended to be a halfpenny version, of which no real examples are known. The style and flan of the coin are not consistent with an early-medieval piece- the flan is too smooth and the design/inscription too well defined and crisp. It may be an 'Ashmore copy' who produced a very similar fake penny of this type (T. Abramson 'Anglo-Saxon counterfeits', p.152). Three silver pennies of Edward the Elder, all East Anglian Portrait types with blundered reverse legends, North 651, AD899-924. Two of the coins were found very close together, the third a little way away. There is no doubt that the three coins represent part of a hoard concealed c.925. This is strikingly close in date to the large hoard of Morley St Peter now in the Castle Museum, Norwich and it must surely be the case that the two hoards are connected. CORONER'S REPORT Description of find Two 10th Century AD silver pennies fused together and broken into two pieces, only the reverse of each is visible. The two coins are bent inwards towards coin 2 (see below), and broken along the bend line. The break is modern. The combined weight is 3.03g, but the coins are slightly chipped in two places, so total weight would have been slightly higher.
