Unusually light, almost 'plasticy' shilling or halfcrown of Charles I or Charles II, probably a contemporary forgery. Mint mark not visible. A local expert in Charles I coins, Bob Lyall, argues that, "at 6.12 grams, it is of full weight for a Charles shilling (some provincial emergency mints are lightweight) and for a period of just a few weeks in 1626 the Tower struck light weight coins with mm cross on steps whereby a shilling weighed around 5.1 grams. A tin or heavily debased silver coin, probably of Charles I or II. The coin is very worn and no traces of its design are legible on either side. However, a crude cross has been inscribed on one side. It is uncertain what this cross is intended to represent. It is possible that this coin dates to the era of the English Civil War, when coinage minted by the king was very crude.
