An incomplete silver coin, probably an early medieval Merovingian obol given its weight. The design seen on the coin is most closely paralleled by examples in the 'early penny' (or sceatta) series of the 'Secondary Phase' dating to the early decades of the 8th century, e.g. some types within or related to Series K and L, although the style on this coin is crude in comparison and the weight of the coin at 0.27g (probably no more than 0.40g if the coin was complete) is far too low for an early penny. The design can be described as follows: 'Obverse': Standin…

An early-medieval Merovingian obol, probably minted in Paris, c.700-50. Ref: Dhénin and Schiesser 2007: 289 (no.7). The coin recorded here is the same coin as Dhénin and Schiesser no. 7, The coin appears to be a relatively base silver and is corroded. The flan is an uneven shape, possibly the result of post-depositional effects. Reference: M Dhénin & P Schiesser (2007), Oboles mérovingiennes, Revue Numismatique 163, 283-313.

An early-medieval silver Merovingian (Frankish) denier, dating from c.675-750 (Belfort 5726-30). Ref: Belfort 1892: 207-8. The reverse of the coin matches those shown in Belfort nos. 5726-30 but the obverse is slightly harder to place, in part owing to its condition. Most akin to Belfort 5726 although this has no cross in front of the face. Many other deniers exhibit crosses in front of the bust. The place in the sequence of deniers is difficult to assess but given that this coin is a little corroded it indicates that the silver content is not high, suggesting the coin should be…

A silver early medieval coin, probably a Merovingian denier dating c.725-50 and possibly minted in Poiters St.Hilaire (ancient Petavis) although this is uncertain. For similar coins from this mint see Depeyrot 2001, pl. 5, Poiters St-HIl nos 3 and 4. However, while the reverse type on these matches this coin, the bust here is of much better workmanship. ref: G.
