Copper alloy strap end. A strap end of composite construction with two plates of thickness 0.9 and 0.4mm with a central probably forked spacer plate between them whose tip projects at the outer ogival end. The inner end is lightly engrailed. A rivet of diameter 1.7mm passes through the inner end to attach the plates to each other and the strap. A woven fabric strap remains preserved between the plates – the finder kindly notes he had kept the object wet to preserve what was at first thought to be a leather strap, as the find-spot was also damp. The use of a textile strap may deno…

Copper alloy and textile strap end. A pair of plates or a single plate folded lengthways with an ogival outer end and a rivet hole of diameter 1.6mm at its inner end, which was probably engrailed. A further rivet at the front end was only noted during image processing. Woven fabric, now of a buff tint, remains trapped between the plates. This might point to a later medieval date within the available range as sumptuary laws enacted following the Black Death, particularly the Statute of 1369, restricted the wearing of leather straps by the lesser sort. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1400…
