An incomplete copper alloy strap end dating from the Early Medieval period, in the 9th century AD. Although in one piece, the strap end has two distinct parts: the strap attachment plate, and a long tapering shaft. The split-end strap attachment plate is trapezoidal in plan (being 15mm long and its width tapering from 10mm at the split end to 7mm where it joins to the shaft), and wedge-shaped in profile. Near its widest point are two rivet holes, with rivets still in place. There remains some organic material within the split, but it has mostly disintegrated, allowing the sh…

A copper alloy artefact, probably a strap end of the folded sheet type, dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1250 - 1400. It is constructed from a strip of sheet copper alloy, folded over roughly half way along its length. In the centre of one end of the strip is a circular, domed extension; the other end tapers to a blunt point. In the centre of the underside of the circular extension is an integral single, copper alloy rivet with a large flat head which passes through a perforation in the other end to hold the strap end closed. There is no decoration, but there are tra…

An incomplete copper alloy Medieval strap end, dating from about AD 1200 - 1500. Only one sheet of the strap end survives. It would have had a sheet spacer and a second plate as well, or perhaps just a second plate. It is rectangular in plan, with rounded shoulders at the closed end, flanking a cast knob perhaps in the form of an acorn. The knop is thicker than the plate. There is no evidence of rivets. The attachment end is incomplete. The strap end is 28.5mm long, 11.5mm wide and 1.9mm thick. 1.2g. Compare various types in Egan and Pritchard (1991).

The strap end is sub-ovate with a zoomorphic terminal at the closed end. The attachment end is missing. The central design appears to be curvilinear interlace with traces of niello, but it is corroded making it difficult to decipher.
