Copper alloy strap end. A cast button knop is set at the end of two split sheets at the butt end. The form of the object is also very similar to that of a massy ball-ended late medieval or early post-medieval strap end, though the source record here asserts a Middle Saxon date. An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, possibly an early medieval strap end dating to circa AD 1000-1100. The object is sub-rectangular and broken at one end. The object has two main parts: the widest end is thinner and rectangular (10.91 mm in length, 7.66 mm in width and 2.40 mm thick) and has a circular perforation. Below this flatter plate is a thicker rectangular portion (4.39 mm thick); it is concave on the decorated side and convex on the reverse, tapering to a broken point. The thicker portion is very worn and corroded, only traces of&n…

Copper-alloy strap-end of unusual form. It consists of a rounded or heart-shaped plate which is split for almost all its length to hold the strap. One half is missing (old break) but the other, probably the front, survives complete. It has low-relief openwork decoration with minute traces of gilding in the recesses. The design is symmetrical, with an outer frame containing six central rounded lobes (two vertical rows of three each). The central lobes each have a pair of tendrils or spokes emerging from them to join the outer frame, forming three holes down either side. The top pair ma…

Copper alloy possible strap end fragment. Cast straight-sided strip, apparently broken across a fixing hole of diameter 2.5mm at either end, and with incised or creased lines on its more uneven side. Early strap ends could be very slipshod or improvised in construction, probably reusing older scraps of metal. Their identification as such is often only possible through thorough recording of a grave and its contents. In the absence of this record, a function as a mount fragment must also be considered, along with a broader date range. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Medieval,…

A copper alloy sheet fitting, possibly a strap end or plate for a folding strap clasp, of Medieval or possibly Early Medieval date. The piece is formed of a sub-rectangular strip of copper alloy, just starting to bend back on itself at one end where it would have been wrapped round the bar of the clasp frame, or folded round the strap. At the other end is a single central copper alloy rivet. The sheet has a grey green patina. It is 15.7mm long, 11.8mm wide and 2.4mm thick across the rivet. 0.84g. A cast copper alloy object, possibly an Anglo-Saxon strap end dating to the Early Medieval period. The strap end is sub-triangular in plan and consists of a moulded decorative end, which could be zoomorphic, with an elongated snout and protruding eyes; following the moulded end, there is a narrowed 'neck' and two sets of symmetrically-positioned protruding knops at either side, possibly indicating legs or feet.
