Incomplete Modern silver mount, AD 1917. This is a silver plate in the shape of a shield, with a small raised lip around all edges. On the inner face of the shield are three pointed rivets, folded in towards the centre. The reverse of the plate displays the hallmarks, which show this was made in Birmingham in 1917.

Description: Fragment of a small gilded silver flat openwork mount, probably Roman in date, perhaps a rectangular fitting for belt or strap. A silver object, possibly a mount, of uncertain date, probably Post Medieval to Modern, AD 1650 - 1900. It is an invert drop shape, rounded at the top and tapering to a point at the base. It is convex and hollow on the reverse. The front is moulded with a grinning mask, perhaps a devil, a lion, or the Green man. The fragment consists of decorated silver plate attached to a piece of corroded iron. The silver plate has the form of a ninth century strap end but the presence of the iron points to it having had some other use. The incised decoration is in the ninth/early tenth century ‘Trewhiddle’ style but too little survives to allow a confident identification of the motifs used. An incomplete Medieval silver bar mount dating c. 1100-1400. The mount has a central boss comprising a hollow dome with a flat rim at the apex around a large central aperture (3.63mm diameter). The bars have a D-shaped cross-section and extend from opposing sides of the dome narrowing from 4.45mm to 2.68mm where they terminate in a circular pierced lobe, or rivet hole. As well as having received numerous circumferential losses the edge has also been bent at one point. It was originally stud like, consisting of a broadly circular, flat head attached to a separate stem for attachment, the latter possibly of base metal. Post Medieval to Modern silver mount in the shape of a six petal flower. The end of the attachment spike or rivet forms a raised pellet in the flower centre on the stud’s outer face. Alternate petals have the same incised pattern, some with a seemingly ‘crimped’ outer edge. The attachment rivet has a series of upward facing ribs. Similar ribs are still used today in upholstering.
