Incomplete Modern silver mount, AD 1917. This is a silver plate in the shape of a shield, with a small raised lip around all edges. On the inner face of the shield are three pointed rivets, folded in towards the centre. The reverse of the plate displays the hallmarks, which show this was made in Birmingham in 1917.

Small silver shield-shaped flat mount with two holes, probably for separate rivets, one in the centre near the top and the other near the base. There are two incurved scallops on the top edge, with a point in the centre, and the front face is decorated along all three edges with a row of hand-punched dots. Weight 0.21g. Height 10mm. Width 9mm. Thickness 0.5mm.  Despite the handmade decoration, shields of this shape (with a double incurve to the top) are only found in the post-medieval period, most commonly from the 18th century onwards, and so this mount is likely to be 18th…

Description: Fragment of a small gilded silver flat openwork mount, probably Roman in date, perhaps a rectangular fitting for belt or strap. It is sharply rectangular in cross-section, with parallel, straight sides and both ends broken. Two triangular apertures are present, along with one crescentic, and part of another. The reserved bars have a scrolly appearance, ending in roundels. No means of attachment has survived. One break is recent but the other is not, being covered in a ferrous deposit that has afflicted many metal objects on this site. Patches …

A silver object, possibly a mount, of uncertain date, probably Post Medieval to Modern, AD 1650 - 1900. It is an invert drop shape, rounded at the top and tapering to a point at the base. It is convex and hollow on the reverse. The front is moulded with a grinning mask, perhaps a devil, a lion, or the Green man. The nose, eyse and eyebrows are clear, with flowing hair and a long wavy pointed beard. Above the eyebrows are either horns or ears or a mane. There is no evidence of attachment, so it was probably soldered to a larger object. The object is 28.3mm long, 12.0mm wide, 3.3mm thick …

The fragment consists of decorated silver plate attached to a piece of corroded iron. The silver plate has the form of a ninth century strap end but the presence of the iron points to it having had some other use. The incised decoration is in the ninth/early tenth century ‘Trewhiddle’ style but too little survives to allow a confident identification of the motifs used. These consist of a triangular panel filled with oblique lines, a feature difficult to parallel. Through this panel are two leaf tendrils. To the left of the panel is a crescent panel containing further leaves…

Silver mount. A two-part fixture detached from a larger object. A comma-shaped plate and a smaller plate of possibly quatrefoil form are [probably] soldered together, and a small tab on the back of the latter may relate to the fixing of both. The display side of the larger plate bears a covering of what appear to be individually applied leaves in fine stamped metal sheet and is bordered by a string of tiny pellets. The smaller round plate presents itself as a slightly concavo-convex floret with four orders of finely modelled stamped petals round a central boss: a chrysanthemum flower m…

Probable late Post Medieval to early Modern silver pyramidal mount set with an amber coloured glass or stone. Possibly from something like a jewellery or knick knack box as the base is flat. The mount is hollow (only 0.8g including the glass/stone) which suggests a Victorian Gothic Revival or Arts and Crafts Movement object. Suggested date range c1840 to c1920 AD, but possibly later. Length 9mm, width 6mm, height 7mm, weight 0.8mm.

Description: Unusual partly gilded silver and niello-inlaid mount of early-medieval date, perhaps broken and repaired. It is rectangular, thick and hollowed on the reverse, and decorated in Carolingian-style relief with openwork elements. The decoration is based around a bold raised flat-topped diagonal cross or saltire dividing the square into quarters, with  a worn boss in the centre and at the end of each arm. Silver possible mount. A thin strip of beaten metal decorated with incised comma-shaped curls between rouletted lines, and with zones infilled by vertical hatching. Bend to penannular form, and possibly a binding from a cane or whip stock. The thickness of the metal is a feature it shares with various items of silver scrap to which a Victorian date is usually attributable. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1850 Length (as found): 25mm, Width: 8.6mm, Thickness: 0.2mm, Weight: 0.64gms

An incomplete silver mount of post-medieval date (c. 18th century). As well as having received numerous circumferential losses the edge has also been bent at one point. It was originally stud like, consisting of a broadly circular, flat head attached to a separate stem for attachment, the latter possibly of base metal. A rectangular scar from the stem is visible at the centre of the reverse. On similar mounts the circumference is clearly scalloped; this disc is either rather worn or was originally smooth. There are small punch marks in the spandrels between each lob…

Silver mount. Cast rectangular openwork mount comprising a central rhomboid with a knopped loop on each of its four sides. A pair of integrally cast rivets of diameter 2.4mm and length 1.2mm with burred ends project from the back. Presumably for a belt, perhaps complementing a silver buckle suite. The finder kindly notes the fan-like pattern of fine lines on the back: these are deemed to indicate the use of a mould made of cuttlefish bone. Comparable white metal [lead/tin alloy] mounts from London are dated to 1400-1450 (Egan 1991, 205, fig. 129 nos 1112-1113), this is perhaps an …

Post Medieval to Modern silver mount in the shape of a six petal flower. The end of the attachment spike or rivet forms a raised pellet in the flower centre on the stud’s outer face. Alternate petals have the same incised pattern, some with a seemingly ‘crimped’ outer edge. The attachment rivet has a series of upward facing ribs. Similar ribs are still used today in upholstering. Dates from c1750 to c1940 AD. Diameter 11mm, thickness 8mm, weight 0.75g.

An incomplete, silver cinquefoil mount in the form of a flower, likely of Medieval date and dating c. AD 1200-1500. The mount has a largely concave obverse and a largely convex reverse. It is in the form of a flower with five heart-shaped petals extending from the centre. Each of the petals is concave on the reverse, but the petals are angled inwards, thus resulting in the obverse overall being concave and the reverse overall being convex. The petals are separated from one another by thin, rectangular grooves. The reverse is undecorated, though there is a mark down the centre of one o…
