Record ID: IOW-E646A3
Object type: MUSKET BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete Post-Medieval cast lead musket ball, c.AD 1600-1800.
The casting seam and the remains of a circular casting sprue can be seen. Its surface is very smooth suggesting it was manufactured in a quasi-industrial context. The musketball is almost intact, apart from two scratches on either sides of the casting seam, which may be the result of post-deposition deformation. The very good condition of its surface suggests the shot was found close to its point of manufacture and was never fired.

A worn Post Medieval cast lead possible musket ball, c.AD 1600-1800.
This is a heavily worn lead alloy ball; the wear has destroyed the original surface of the object and any casting seams or decoration that may have once been present, making it difficult to identify. Although the wear is even all around the object, it is not a perfect sphere. Instead, this shot is slightly flattened, which would suggest is was fired and impacted a solid object like a target or the ground.

A complete Post-Medieval cast lead musket ball, c. AD 1600-1800.
Description: The object is sub-spherical in shape with slight protrusions at either end. The surface is irregular and 'dimpled' throughout, although it lacks any clear damage. The casting seam is no longer visible. The surface patina is a light white with small patches of brown.
Discussion: This intact musketball's good condition suggests the shot was likely never fired or, if it was, that it did not hit it's target. The patination and pitting is most likely due to post-depositional processes, rathe…

Two lead alloy musket balls of post-medieval date (c. AD 1650-1850). The balls are globular and well-formed. Each has had its sprue trimmed, leaving a slight stub. There are no obvious set up marks on the musket balls' surfaces, however both display deep dents, probably damage from animal grazing. Both musket balls are the same diameter and weight, and so possibly came from the same mould. The size of the shots suggests use with a short musket or carbine. The metal's surface for both shows a mid-grey patina.
