Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire East
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead alloy weight. It is shaped like an elongated sphere. The neck is long and flat, sub regtanular in shape. In the centre, near the tip is a suspension hole. The base is flat in the centre and would therefore stand. Weights like these are seen in the Roman (for example SUSS-EA2CCC) and Medieval (NLM-5D1F37) periods. The weight of 192g does not accord with the Roman weight system, as 1 semis is equvilent to 164.5g. It is closer to the Troy system, where 1/2 lb would be 186.5g, this was probably in use from the late 14th century, only being sta…

Object type: GAMING PIECE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A sub-square lead alloy gaming piece, token or possible weight. It is rhomboid in shape although it was probably intended to be square. At each corner is an upstanding 'knop' cutting the diagonal of the corner to about a quarter of its length. Running across the face from these are two parallel lines etched into the lead alloy. The bottom of the artefact is flat, it has an even mid grey patina.
Dimensions: it is 32mm long and 32mm wide, 6mm thick and weighs 47.65g

Object type: MINIATURE OBJECT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead alloy miniature axe head. It is rectangular with a flared blade, widening out at nearly 45 degrees from the body. The blade is slightly crumpled along its length. The butt end is longer and wider than the body section. Nearly in the centre a square hole has been made, presumably for suspension. The object has an even white patina. It is probably Roman in age, it is similar to other votive axes recorded for the period on the database.

Object type: TOY
Broad period: MODERN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast lead alloy cat. It is a plump, contented cat in the seated position. The back of the model is quite crude although the features of the hip and leg are present, but the face is well moulded. It has been painted yellow. It seems to be a bred, domesticated cat and this is therefore probably a model of a twentieth century cat. The finder notes that the base is possibly damaged and it may have sat on a platform of some sort.

Object type: TOILET ARTICLE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable scoop for cosmetic or toilet use. The material is uncertain but is probably lead alloy. It is formed of a short remnant of the shaft, which is triangular in section, the back being flat and the front having a ridge down the centre. It terminates in a wider, flattened circular section which is half the thickness of the shaft, and would scoop a small amount of power or similar. Like SWYOR-BFF380, there is not enough diagnostic material remaining to date but it may be Roman in period.
Dimensions: It is 30mm long and the scoop is 8.5mm wide, it weighs 4.19g

A cross shaped lead alloy moulding of uncertain purpose. The tapering long arm ends in a blunt point and is slightly bent halfway down, damage rather than intentional. The other end of this is terminated with a moulded in, overhanging circluar shape, wider than the arms and bent over in places around its circumference. The two short arms emanate from a point about 1/4 of the way down the long arm. These are circular in section (as is the long arm) but splay out slightly towards the blunt ends.

Post Medieval lead alloy shy cock in the shape of a cockerel. The flat figurine and it's thick oval base are a single cast piece. Shy cocks seem to have been a British phenomena that were popular from the late fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. This one is unusual as it appears to be decorated on both sides. A similar looking example is illustrated as Type 1 Design 1 in Toys, Trifles & Trinkets 1200-1800 (Forsyth, H. & Egan, G., 2005, p.240, fig.7.1). Suggested date range c1700 to c1800 AD.

Late Medieval to early Post Medieval lead alloy shield shaped pan weight. Equates to 60 drams or 3.7 ounces (almost 4 ounces or quarter a pound) under the ‘binary’ averdepois system. The decorated side consists of a crowned fleur-de-lis, surrounded by a recessed border approximately 5mm lower than the decorated area. The border is largely absent from the top edge of the weight. The weight is lightly abraded and the decoration is still clearly visible. Dates to between c1390 and c1588 AD.

A handmade lead alloy aeroplane. It has a cigar shaped fuselage with a flat conical nose. The wings and the smaller tailplane are both triangular, finishing in a sharp point. Approximate halfway down the fuselage the body flattens to the tail, and on the tail end of the fuselage is an flattish oval structure. From the underside it can be seen that the fuseage is hollow and has been formed around something, the whole is cut from one sheet of lead alloy. It is red in colour and may have been painted. A lead alloy artefact. It is circular in shape and has five holes punched into it in a cross shape, one of which has been nearly lost from one edge, either mispunched at the time or worn later. It is posible that it is a curtain or dress weight which has been later repurposed, perhaps to use as a small seive. It has an even white patina.
