A complete wrought iron possible socketed arrowhead of Bodkin type dating to the medieval period c.AD.1200-1550. The object is formed of a cylindrical socket that makes up the majority of the object's length. This is 8.6mm in diameter at its mouth and narrow to 7.5mm in diameter over 18mm. At this point it hen expands into a bulbous form (8.4mm diameter) before narrowing to a sharp point. The object is a dark red brown colour and too worn to identify facets at the point from hammering.  The arrow head is 33.5mm long, 8.6mm wide and weighs 5.27 grams. This is similar in…

An incomplete wrought iron medieval barbed and socketed 'broadhead' arrowhead. The surviving section of the blade is triangular in shape with straight sides and lozenge-shaped cross-section. One side of the inner end projects into an incomplete barb, whilst the one on the other is largely missing. A deep groove runs along the joints between the blade and socket on either face. The socket is circular in cross-section and expands slightly towards its outer end. A longitudinal fold runs along one side of the socket from manufacture. The surface o…

An incomplete replica African spearhead, probably made during the 19th century. The blade of this spear is of a elongated leaf with no central spine and a long tang, where it would have connected with the spear shaft. Although leaf-like blades are common on British artefacts from the Bronze Age through to the Medieval period, British spearheads throughout these periods typically ended in a conical of metal that sat top the end of the spear shaft, rather than with this solid tang. These spears also had larger heads, or raised ridges running down the centre of the head. S…

An incomplete wrought iron barbed arrowhead of Medieval date (c.AD 1200-1300). The arrowhead is comprised of the point, a portion of a barb and the socket with a total overall length of 74.3mm. The arrowhead is triangular in plan and likely of LMMC type 14 with long barbs that would have originally come down as far as the socket, but much of the barbs have bene lost to old damage (resulting in a maximum surviving head length of 46.1mm and width 27.1mm). The cutting edge is set at the end of a long conical socket (now packed with corrosion product) measuring 12.2mm in diameter at the ba…

Iron arrowhead. Wrought iron broad-bladed hunting arrowhead, with one of its two large barbs remaining below the point. The long V-shaped cutting edge is set at the end of a tapered hollow socket. The wide blade would maximise tissue damage to the quarry, and would promote blood loss to both weaken it and to enable its trail to be followed by hounds. Though chipped the survival of the metal is unusually good for a ferrous metal field find; it might recently have been disturbed from a hitherto sealed context. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1400 Length: 53.1mm, Width: 20.7mm, Thick…

An incomplete cast iron arrowhead of indeterminate date. The arrowhead is diamond shaped in cross section and there could have been tangs, though as the edges have been broken this is difficult to verify. The tip and the blade edges are intact though there is a great deal of corrosion product on the object. The base of the arrowhead has been broken off and so the profile of this cannot be identified. As there is a lack of definite diagnostic features visible, it is not possible to assign a date to this object; There are tanged and untanged diamond cross-section arrowheads of this size…

A forged iron projectile, probably an arrowhead or crossbow bolt, of medieval date, c. AD 1200-1500. The object has a shortened rectangular tang, which broadens quickly into a tapering shaft. This shaft remains broadly rectilinear before flaring to create a more rounded appearance. It then narrows sharply to form the point. It is a horizontal pointed oval in cross section. The iron surface is now pitted and decayed, and patches of orange iron corrosion show on both the upper and lower surfaces. GLO-3515D4 is similar in profile and in the design of the point, but has the more usu…

An incomplete iron, wrought Medieval tanged arrowhead c. 1200 - 1450 AD. This small iron arrowhead may fit into the swallowtail form but in the absence of much of the tangs, it is difficult to be conclusive on type. The head consists of a narrow triangular form with a diamond cross section. The tangs are now largely broken away. The surface is heavily eroded with considerable ferrous oxide and in danger of fragmenting, if not conserved. Dimensions. 43.75mm long, 13.33mm wide with the socket remnant measuring 6.2mm. It weighs 3.7gm. Similar arrowheads can be seen on the PAS datab…

An incomplete iron medieval socketed 'broadhead' arrowhead. Both sides of the blade are missing leaving its original form unclear. A low, rounded mid-rib runs down the centre of both faces of the blade, expanding to develop into an elongated circular cross-sectioned socket at its inner end. The socket is c.18.00mm in length and c.10.5mm in diameter. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded. This is probably one of Jessop's (1997, 2) 'early multi-purpose forms', which he suggests date mainly to the 11th to 14th century AD (ibid.). In the LMMC catalogue (1967) ty…

An incomplete Medieval iron socketed arrowhead, dating 13th-14th century. Description: The arrowhead has a triangular blade and a cylindrical socket. The blade section tapers very gradually from the socket to the point, the bottom corners are heavily worn and it seems unlikely that it would have been barbed. The central spine is subtle and not well pronounced. Much of the point and socketted end are also missing. Measurements: 39.4mm long, 12.41mm wide, 8.94mm thick (at socket widest), and 5.36g in weight. Discussion: Due to the wear of this example and the uncertainty as to …

Medieval iron arrowhead, kite-shaped blade with a flat, lozenge section. It appears to have been tanged, the tang separated from the blade by a transverse collar. Length 53.0mm, Width 15.0mm, Thickness 2.6mm, Collar 6.9mm wide, Mass 5.42g. This arrowhead does not fit comfortably into Jessop's 1996 classification but might be best accommodated in his Type T3 although the collar is difficult to parallel. This type was in use in 12th and 13th century.

An incomplete iron arrowhead of medieval date. The arrowhead is socketed with a pointed tip and near-parallel sides to the break close to the end of the socket. The arrowhead does not appear to have been barbed and the style is similar to bodkin or 'bullet' arrowheads of the period c. AD 1200-1400. Often considered 'armour piercing' these weapons would only have been effective against armour at close range. Jessop, O. 1997. Medieval Arrowheads. Datasheet 22.
