An incomplete ceramic Roman tegula dating to the period c. AD 43 – 410. The roof tile is sub-rectangular in plan, with a L-shape cross section. The remaining right-angled flange has a finished bevelled end and a flat top. The cutaways used to overlap adjacent tiles when fitted are missing. The depth of the flange is 18mm and the thickness (measured near the edge) is 16.61mm. The fabric has a layered structure and is orange/red in colour throughout, indicating an oxidised core. It is finely tempered with sand or quartz.

An incomplete Roman ceramic flanged tegula roof-tile (AD 43-410).
This tegula has a broken edge on all sides, all of which are not recent. One edge has a flange with a tapering break, maximum width of 30.0mm. On the upper face, just inside the flange, there is a shallow linear finger-mark groove impression running from the base of the flange obliquely across to the roughly straight longest edge. This is obviously a deliberately made mark -possibly part of a signature. The rear face of the tile is coarse and uneven.
The tile is red throughout and the surface on the top face where…

An incomplete Roman tile, part of a roof tile or tegula. The tile is a dull orange clay fabric of a type typically used within the London area from the mid 1st century to the 2nd century AD. ( As described by the Museum of London when shown ). The tile is 151.1mm wide which represents its original size, 124.56mm long at max, original length unknown due to old breaks across the tile. There are two holes through the tile at a slight angle where nails would have been driven through the tile to secure it. Both inner and outer surfaces are rough.
