Medieval hollow cast copper alloy wheel pommel from a sword or dagger, (Ward Perkins 1940, Type VIII) (Oakeshott type G2 pommel) dating c. AD 1200-1550. Decorated on both faces and around the sides. Both faces have inscribed hatching formed from horizontal and vertical lines. These separate three narrow lozenges which appear to bear traces of lost decorative attachments. Each side is inscribed with a series of diagonal lines in a similar style to the faces. The pommel has a dark green patina with traces of a reddish residue around the lozenges. Rectangular perforation for a tang…

A complete Later Early Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian style) copper alloy sword pommel, dating from c. AD 900 - 1100. The pommel is broadly triangular in shape and has a hollow interior. The base curves upwards towards the outer edges. The pommel is divided into five lobes, increasing in size from the edges to the centre, each separated from its neighbour by a groove. On the upper edge of the central lobe is an oval shaped aperture, through which the tang of the sword would have passed. A corresponding rectangular slot is present on centre of the the lower edge. The pommel has a li…

An incomplete but large and robust scabbard chape of probable very late Iron Age or early Roman date (50 BC - AD 100). The chape is cast as a single piece being triangular in plan with a large rounded solid circular knop at the foot. The upper element is damaged through movement in the plough soil and the edges are feathered. One face has a vertical split / opened seam. The foot knop has a deep recessed circumferential groove around the external edge giving it a turned look. Positioned centrally within this groove is a recessed perforated hole with extant rivet; this would have enable…

A tang and handle end of possibly a Roman iron or steel sword. The whole object is 118mm in length and highly corroded resulting in most of the length being missing. It has a square sectioned tang, 67.5mm in length, 7.5mm at its widest gradually tapering down to 4.5mm at its corroded tip. On one surface there appears to be a slight ridge continuing the line of the tang but there is much corrosion. At the head of the tang the blade widens to 40mm in a slight arc and two rivets are present, approximately 5mm from the edge, probably to fix a sword guard in place. The blade then tapers d…

A cast copper alloy sword pommel of early medieval date, probably Viking era. The pommel consists of 5 lobes with the central lobe being the largest. The three central lobes are hollow. The lobes on either side of the centre diminish in size. The recesses at each end indicate that this was a two-part pommel and there appears to be encrustation between lobes 1 and 2 perhaps from binding material that held together the two parts. The base is flat. It is interesting to note that the three central lobes are much more separated than most examples and individually hollow rather than a singl…

An iron sword pommel, sub-circular in plan and sub-rectangular shaped in section. This appears to be form a one piece pommel, possibly from a similar sword classified as Oakeshott Type X.7 dating from c. 950 to 1000. Oakeshott pommel type A "Brazil-nut" form. There is some pitting and corrosion, but its overall shape is intact. The tang hole is too corroded to discern it's shape. 60mm wide, 48mm in height, 24mm at its thickest point.

Bronze fragment, possibly a fragment of a bladed implement of Bronze Age date, dated to c. 1500BC - 750BC The fragment is broken at both ends and also has peripheral damage (with a surviving length of 26.9mm, a surviving maximum width of 26.8mm and a weight of 15.6g). The object has a prominent rounded midrib, which narrows at the narrower end. Although there is damage and erosion to both sides, there is the suggestion that the object was originally wider one end and is also thicker on the narrowest side (with a maximum thickness of 7.7mm and thickness on the opposite end of 7.2mm).…
