A Post Medieval copper alloy handheld sundial. The sundial is made of a flat copper alloy ring with an open horizontal channel in the centre, which is partly cut open. The item itself has broken vertically along what was most likely the connecting point and has fixed in it's broken position. There is an extremely small segment near the break edge that still retains it's original brass colour. The outer surface is mostly worn due to corrosion but some letters can still barely be readable. The months appear first across the top "I A S O [...] D" (July to December) followed by thre…

An incomplete copper-alloy post medieval portable sundial. This example is of the simple ring type. It is formed of a flat copper-alloy ring with a rectangular channel cut in the centre for about a third of its circumference; this would have contained a separate sliding collar, which is missing. On the external surface, above and below the channel, there are inscribed measurement lines, above which are the first letters of the months of the year: 'I F M A M I' (the earlier months) above and 'I A S O N D' (the later months) below, upside down. The outer surface is worn and corroded.…

An abraded mid brown copper alloy fragment from a pocket sundial dating from the 16th to18th century AD. It consists of a bent, broad, flat section copper alloy strip with a channel cut in the centre of the outer edge between four incised lines. The fragment is fractured at one end by a ragged tear. The fragment is part of a ring which probably hung from a suspension loop. The interior has three lines of stamped numbers and letters divided by inscribed lines. These read; top row: S 4. 5. 6 7 8 9 10 . The centre row reads: 8.7.H.6....H4 3 and the lower row reads: 5.H 4 3 . The object i…
