A possible copper alloys stylus, possibly of Middle Saxon date. The main shaft is oval in section and somewhat thicker than most Middle Saxon stylii. The shaft is bent at approximately the half way point to a 45' angle. It aries in cross section along its length from a mostly oval shape, through quadrilateral, to a flattened profile at the broad, spatulate-shaped terminal. The tip of the terminal is slightly inwardly bent like a tweezer terminal, but this might be accidental. The other end terminates with a flattened triangular nib. The shaft measures 83mm from the tip/nib end and the…

A complete lead stylus of probable medieval to post-medieval date (AD 1066-1750). The object is a rod with a sub-circular section, it tapers to a point at one end, the other end is flattened. Styli of this type are known to have been in use from the medieval to post-medieval periods. Therefore, due to a lack of contextual evidence and any diagnostic features it is not possible to date this object any more closely. Similar examples can be seen on the Portable Antiquities database: NLM-F5A201, CAM-4B884A and YORYM-732F91

Lead Stylus fragment. Cast rod, slightly bent, with a neatly pointed pencil shaped end. Patinated overall. Possibly an incomplete, Roman, copper alloy stylus or cosmetic applicator. The object has a circular-sectioned shaft which curves and has been broken off, losing the pointed end. The bend may be post depositional damage or may be part of its design to sit comfortably in the hand. At its blunt end, the shaft starts to flare into a paddle-like terminal. This terminal is thinner than the shaft, has flat surfaces and is decorated with 4 large ring and dots and one edge with 4 smaller circles. The object measures 61.3mm long, up to 6.8mm wide and 2.5mm thick (shaft) and 1.0mm spatula end. …

A copper-alloy object, possibly a stylus, and possibly of Medieval or post-medieval date. The shaft of the object is oval in section and has been broken approximately 36mm from the point. The upper part is missing. From the break, the shaft flares out and widens slightly. It then steps sharply in where the integrally-cast, circular-section point projects from the centre of the base. The point is 7.8mm long. Just above the step, on the shaft, two, diagonal, parallel lines are incised. They do not go right around the shaft, only approximately one third of the way around.

A cast, lead, probable stylus of undetermined date but most likely Medieval to post-Medieval from the context of its discovery. The object is a thin cylinder of lead, circular in section, measuring 6.8mm in diameter at it's widest point. One end is cut off squarely, the object then tapering slightly to a point at the opposite end. There is some recent damage, probably due to farm machinery.
