Roofing slate made of grey fine-grained metamorphic rock. It is rounded at the top edge but broken at the lower edge and sides so that its original shape is unclear. The peg hole for attachment to the roof is 7.5mm in diameter and appears to have been formed by partially drilling from the upper face and then hitting to complete the perforation. From the size of the hole it would seem likely that this slate was fixed by a wooden peg, rather than a metal nail, which may indicate a medieval date. The peg hole for attachment to the roof is 9mm in diameter and appears to have been formed by partially drilling from the upper face and then hitting to complete the perforation. From the size of the hole it would seem probable that this slate was fixed by a wooden peg, rather than a metal nail, which may indicate a medieval date.
