A possible punch, stamp or die of an unknown date, dating from the Roman through to Post-Medieval period, AD 43 - 1700. The object is mostly rectangular in plan and cross section but either end of the object is flared outwards. The flared ends are of an almost square but slightly rectangular shape. The main body of the object has four moulded bands and scratches to its surface. One of the flared ends is decorated with a large moulded possible a 'H' or 'I' which would have been used to stamp or punch an unknown object. The opposing end appears to be undecorated but has an uneven text…

Cast copper alloy punch, square in section with a circular sectioned, flattened and slightly splayed top. It tapers evenly from the top to the point. The point is irregular with no clear design but presumably originally came to a point or have a shape on it. 79mm long, 18mm diameter at the top, 6 by 7mm at the point; 100.86 grams. Such a simple, functional tool is hard to date and could be Bronze Age - Post Medieval. Similar to record : SUSS-779057

A complete cast copper alloy probable punch or die of probable medieval to post-medieval date. The punch is rectangular in cross section at the punch end, then, after 12mm, develops, tapering to the circular cross-sectioned shaft at the end where a small pin or hanging hole is located. The design on the punch end is a plain cross. The metal has a mid brownish-green colour and is worn. The punch is 68.91mm long, 6.04mm thick (rectangular end), 4.9mm diameter (rounded shaft) and weighs 12.6g.
