An incomplete cast copper-alloy pipe tamper probably dating to the Post Medieval to early Modern period. A moulded depiction of a clenched hand gripping a scroll terminating in an old break beneath. The surface is slightly corroded displaying a patchy green patina. Height 15.8mm, width 44.2mm, weight 11.2g. Complete examples on this database can be seen at HAMP-D64DFB and ESS-581D63, with a similar incomplete example at SUR-48E9F2.

An incomplete post medieval cast copper-alloy pipe tamper probably dating to c.1650-1850. The tamper is in the form of an open-mouthed dolphin or fish, with the tail curved upwards forming part of the handle. It would have once surmounted a cylindrical plug of approximately 10mm diameter and 20mm height that is now missing. The surface has moulded fish-scales over most of the body and displays a light green patchy patina.

The object consists of a pedestal style, with a flat circular base and circular sectioned conical shaft with a circumferential raised collar on both the lower portion of the shaft. A pipe tamper with seal matrix. The piper tamper is in the form of a signet ring. The flat upper surface of the ring has a sub-octagonal bezel which forms the matrix. The engraving depicted is a two-headed eagle. The matrix is slightly scratched, and a chip is missing on one side. Post Medieval copper alloy ring pipe tamper with a circular bezel that was probably originally engraved as a seal matrix or signet. On the opposite side of the ring to the bezel is a collared projection from which the screw on tamper and lower section of the reamer are missing. This style of pipe tamper generally dates from the second half of the 17th century, but this one could date to anytime between c1650 and c1800 AD. Height is 34mm, width 26mm, depth 15mm, and the weight 9.20g.

A copper alloy possible pipe tamper in the shape of a booted leg. The leg starts to bend at what would have been the knee but has broken here. Two circumferential grooves have been incised between the ankle and knee and another two lines are visible centrally under the foot. The foot is very flat and there is no defined heel. A similar leg tamper can be seen at PAS ref. LVPL-9F2487. C.1500 - 1800.

A post-medieval, cast, copper-alloy pipe tamper. The object consists of a circular sectioned shaft with an axe-head terminal. The axe-head is crecentric at one end and hammer-shaped at the other. The shaft expands outwards towards the base and is decorated with three transverse ridges. Both the hammer-head and the base of the shaft could be used to tamp the tobacco. As the diameter of the bowls of clay pipes increased with time, so the diameter of the pipe tampers increased. The remaining fragment is shaped like a signet ring but instead of a complete hoop it forms a hinged joint where something ferrous was attached as some rust remains between the two ends. The base of the tamper is broken and missing. It is similar to other examples on the database, for example LANCUM-2E4A22 and BERK-F0FF67.

An incomplete Post-Medieval cast copper-alloy Pipe Tamper circa AD1700 - AD1850. The object is in the form of a ring with an oval bezel. From the loop of the ring extends a shaft, which has a collar and then a short section of screw thread. The ring is slightly distorted but is in otherwise good condition. It measures 35.7mm in length, the loop is 28.0mm wide, the thickness of the screw thread is 9.0mm and it weighs 9.5g.

A cast copper alloy threaded handle from a pipe tamper set. Comprised of ring, tamper and bowl cleaner/reamer. The ring section measures 29mm wide and is 35mm long. On the top of the ring is a plain/unmarked bezel measuring 15mm in diameter. The lower section of the reamer and the screw on tamper are missing. A post-medieval/Modern copper-alloy pipe tamper in the form of a female's leg with a heeled shoe. The tamper is reeled at the thigh end, with several circumferential mouldings and grooves, and is incomplete here. Similar examples are recorded on the PAS database as SUR-4A2040 and PUBLIC-2C41C6. Others are known representing a man's booted leg, for example SUR-D9C5C6.These tampers are late 18th or 19th century in date.

A solid cast brass pipe tamper in the shape of a leg, measuring 75mm in length. It is in the form of a ladies leg and including the foot which appears to show a shoe. The top of the leg at it's widest part (which is egg shaped) measures 10 mm. There is in other visible sign of any pattern or any markings.
