Lead window came casting waste, of probable medieval or early post-medieval date. The object consists of a conjoined strip of three H-shaped cames with a sprue at the upper edge. The strip is 32.1mm long and up to 14.2mm high and 11.2mm thick at the casting gate. The individual cames measure 9.3mm wide by 6.9mm thick, although examination of another specimen found in the same field [PUBLIC-622C25] indicates that the actual dimensions further down the mould would be c.9.0 by 5.5mm. The cut face suggests that a single bladed tool was used to remove the waste, rather than a pair of shear…

Lead window came casting waste, of probable medieval or early post-medieval date. The object consists of a conjoined strip of three H-shaped cames with a sprue at the upper edge. The strip is 32.2mm long and up to 22.7mm high and 11.0mm thick at the casting gate. The individual cames measure 9.0mm wide by 5.5mm thick. The cut face suggests that a single bladed tool was used to remove the waste, rather than a pair of shears. The object has a uniform light grey/cream patination. Egan, in 'Material culture in London in an age of transition' (2005) illustrates a similar item as no. 7…

A fragment of post medieval window came. The lead alloy artefact is much abraded, making its original shape hard to determine. There is a raised saltire across the fragment which may indicate the direction of four strips that held diamond shaped window panes. The rear is flat. The fragment is 16mm by 13mm, and 3mm thick. Weight 1.7g.

A lead window came of late medieval to post-medieval date. It is of cruciform plan and H-shaped section from the junction of four panes of glass. There is an integral loop attached to the rear face, possibly soldered on. This would have been to hold a window support rod. Due to its low melting temperature, lead is subject to "creep" at the temperatures in which it is normally used. Creep is a slow, plastic, permanent deformation, which occurs under stress, the resultant shape remaining once the stress is removed. Dimensions: 22 mm long x 18 mm wide x 6 mm thick. Weight: 10.03 gm.

A fragment of lead window came of late medieval to post-medieval date. It is T-shaped in plan, and H-shaped in section from the junction of two or three panes of glass. The internal spaces of the came are filled with a solid gritty material. There is an integral loop on one face made up of two lengths of lead bent to form a circle and soldered at the front where they join. This would have been to hold a window support rod. Due to its low melting temperature, lead is subject to "creep" at the temperatures in which it is normally used. Creep is a slow, plastic (i.e. permanent; doesn't r…

An incomplete end spure from lengths of Post Medieval or Modern lead glazing strip. This sprue, along with another at the other end of the glazing strips, would of helped stop the soft strips deforming during transport. There are the ends of two strips on this incomplete sprue. Each strip is H shaped in profile, providing a channel for glass to fit in on either side of the strip. The sprue has been mishapened and gouged by farm machinery. The sprue is a dull grey on colour. The remains of the sprue are 27.9mm wide. The strips are 9.8mm high, and 7.2mm and 7.0mm in width, althoug…

Each strip is H shaped in profile, providing a channel for glass to fit in on either side of the strip. The strips have been cut from the sprue at an angle. The sprue is a dull grey on colour.
