A flint borer of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, dating to 4000-1600 BC. It is a secondary flake, knapped from a light grey flint core. It is sub-rectangular in plan. The ventral face has a small bulb of percussion and well defined conchoidal ripples on the ventral face only following hard hammer knapping. A small flake has been removed from two edges on the ventral face and one long edge on the dorsal face. The distal end is broken near the terminal but originally was probably used as a borer.

A probable Late Mesolithic to Neolithic knapped and retouched borer dating to c. 7000 - 2100 BC. The implement is formed from a tertiary flake, and shows signs of retouch along one side of the dorsal face. The proximal end has been knapped to produce a point, the tip of which is broken. It is dark grey in colour..

A complete flint possible borer or awl of probable of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. It is roughly triangular in shape, forming a sharp point at the distal end. It has a small bulb on the ventral face and a faintly rippled ventral surface. There is evidence of occasional crude retouch along both sides and at the pointed end. The flint is light grey-brown in colour with white patches and has a shiny patina.

A Neolithic/Bronze Age flint borer made from dark brown flint.
The flint is roughly rectangular with a pointed corner section. Ripples travel away from the point of the piece. Two sections of the ventral surface are loose and can lose some flakes if forced. The ventral surface is almost flat with a short, scaled and semi-abrupt retouch.
The distal surface is covered in cortex and slightly bulges outwards.

Object type: BORER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
A borer or piercer fabricated on a natural flake of light brown, mottled flint. The flake is sub-triangular in plan. One face is free of cortex whilst the opposing face retains a small area of light brown cortex. The flake has been extensively, but crudely worked using long, scaled, abrupt and semi-abrupt retouch. A point has been created and finished by removing two spalls from the tip downwards. This crude type of tool, utilising a natural flake, is typical of flint working during later Prehistory.

A possible flint borer made on a secondary flake. A pointed tool used to make holes. The object is sub-triangular in shape and tapers to a point at the distal end which is achieved by the removal of spalls perpendicular to the tip to form a chisel-like edge. The flint is semi-translucent, light beige and mottled with a mid-gloss patina. A small amount of cortex remains on the proximal end of the dorsal and ventral faces. The dorsal face show six linear parallel blade removal. The ventral face shows a low bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a soft hammer however conchoidal rip…

A borer or piercer fabricated on a thermal flake of honey-coloured flint. The flake is sub-triangular in plan. One face is free of cortex and may have the scars of previous flake removal. The opposing face is predominantly covered in an off-white cortex. The narrowest part of the flake has been worked into a point using short, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch along the curved, inner edge. The tip of the point has had two spalls removed at approximately 45 degrees to the vertical plane to produce a chisel-like point with two facets.

A borer fabricated on a thermal flake of pale grey flint. The flake is sub-triangular in plan and has circular ripples of percussion on one face with the opposing face covered in an off-white cortex. One edge of the flake, at the narrowest end, has been worked using short, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch to narrow the flake even further and produce a sharp point. This has been further enhanced by the removal of two small spalls struck downwards from the tip. The retouch along the edge also serves to create a scraping edge making this a dual-purpose tool perhaps. It is probably Neolithic i…

A flint borer or piercer fabricated on a primary flake from a nodule of grey/brown flint. There is no bulb of percussion and no ripples of percussion evident on the ventral face but there are two patches of chalky off-white cortex. The dorsal face is completely covered in the same chalky cortex. One edge of the flake has been thinned using long, parallel, shallow retouch. At one end of this thinned area, a deep notch has been worked using short, scaled, abrupt retouch, creating a point on one 'corner' of the flake. This point has been further worked using short, scaled, abrupt retouch…
