A post medieval French coin; a silver 15 sol piece of Louis XVI. The 15 sol denomination seems only to have been minted under Louis XVI in 1791 – 1793, in the years immediately before France became a republic. The obverse legend should read “LOUIS XVI ROI – DES FRANCOIS” and the date, round a bust of Louis XVI facing left, and on the reverse, “15 SOL” across the field with the legend “REGNE DE LA LOI” above and “L’AN DE LA LIBERTE” on two lines beneath (meaning “the rule of the law” and “the year of Liberty”. For reference see William Craig (1966)…

A sub-circular coin weight, which is 17.4mm in diameter and 5.0mm thick, and weighs 9.01g. The weight is heavily worn and it is not possible to make out any design on the obverse. There is a slight dent, c2mm thick, starting from the edge of the obverse face and extending down the side of the weight. There is a rose-like lattice design on the reverse, with four sub-square depressions within the lattice in the centre of the design, and eight sub-circular depressions in the outer part of the lattice. There appears to be a funnel-shaped design protruding from two petals of the rose; howev…
