A silver Post-Medieval sixpence of Charles II (AD 1660-1685) dated to the period AD 1674-1684. Crowned cruciform shields reverse. Mint of London. The coin is very worn and displays two sub-parallel straightned folds suggesting it may have been repurposed as a love token. DUR-735B12 notes that: "Love tokens' were made using coins dating from the time of Elizabeth I (AD 1558-1603) to the reign of Anne (AD 1702-1714) with some Georgian examples and some as late as the Victorian period. North Vol 2, p.137, no.2015. The coin is pierced at 11 o’clock on the obverse. Some pierced/modified coins can come within the remits of Treasure Act 1996, including all finds of pierced silver or gold coins up to AD 1180 and some thereafter depending upon the nature of the piercing. Pierced medieval and later silver coins are however fairly common single finds and many are also known from hoards.
