A small flint core probably of Mesolithic date to Early Neolithic date (c. 9000 - 3300 BC). The object is made from a dark-grey/dark-brown translucent flint. The surface of the flint is very clear and is not covered by any white patina associated with recortication. However, there is an area of cortex remaining on the flint. The object has a sub-conical shape. It is most likely an example of a conical bladelet core. There is a single striking platform, which serves as the flat base of the cone-like object. There is also a single flaking surface that wraps around the remaind…

An incomplete perforated stone tool, possibly a mace head or pebble hammer, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic date c.9000 BC- 2400 BC. A fine-ish grained [<0.5 mm] basic igneous rock of grey appearance. The object is broadly sub-oval in shape and sub-rectangular cross section with gentle concave sides. In the centre on both sides is a sub-oval perforation, bored into both sides, although the two recesses do not meet in the middle.  It is possible that this piece is a prehistoric stone tool, possibly unfinsihed, although a natu…

Object type: FABRICATOR
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable flint fabricator or rod probably dating from the early Mesolithic to late bronze-age period. Description: The fabricator is an elongated rectangle in shape and triangular in cross-section. It is made on a secondary flake with a small area of pale brown cortex at the distal end. The dorsal side bears the scars of the removal of two earlier longitudinal flakes. The bulb of percussion has been removed by retouch but there are conchoidal ripples along the full length of the ventral face. There is invasive, scaled semi-abrupt flake removal scar…

Dark grey flint with re-formed cortex, core. A pyramidal core with long narrow parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working from a broad flat platform. The working was not carried all round the object. A dense milky patina has extended across all struck surfaces and may argue a subsequent long period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Where this appears on the Wolds it is a local environmental effect and is very common. However, such patination is rare in the assemblage presented from Scotter, so this object may have been imported, perhaps in gravel or with chalk used to mar…

Pale semi-translucent honey-coloured flint debitage. Two small thin flakes [of length 35.3mm and 28.4mm], each with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat rippled ventral surface and a tiny bulb at one end. A draft of long angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect appears on the larger flake, while the smaller may bear very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect at one end. Opaque pale grey flint possible core fragment. A thin sub-rectangular flake with broad and narrow long flakes removed by unidirectional working from a flat platform. Both the long edges may be serrated, though this is more easily felt than observed; along one long side the putative serration may be accompanied by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect. The ventral surface is flat. If not a core, this might alternatively be a plano-convex knife, perhaps unfinished. Grey flint with cortex, core fragment. Probably part of a pyramidal core, with narrow parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working from a flat platform; one or two sides appear to have parted from the object during this activity. The penultimate episode seems to have been the removal of another thin narrow flake from the left [as illustrated] side of the striking platform. The lack of subsequent patination might suggest this object to have then been incorporated into a sealed deposit. Suggested date: possibly Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Flint debitage fragments. A worked piece of flint, probably a burin or possibly a borer, probably of Mesolithic date, 9000 BC - 4000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of tan coloured flint. It is triangular in cross-section, and tapers to a point at the distal end. The right dorsal face is covered with previous removal scars. A burin spall has been removed from each side of the distal end, leaving a wide tip at right angles to the flake. The proximal left edge is also retouched with short, abrupt, scaled removals.
