A single iron spearhead of Early-Medieval date (c.6th to 7th century AD). Swanton type E3. The spearhead is almost complete but in bent condition. The remains of the head weigh c.362.0g. Use of a flexible dress-maker's tape-measure shows the artefact to have had a length of c.347mm and in its current bent condition it occupies a straight length of c.339mm between tip and socket end. The maximum width, across the head's shoulders, is 46.2mm. The thickness at that location is c.12.7mm. The spearhead has a very shallow lozenge shaped cross-section along its length. …

A group of two iron knives of probable early medieval date (c.410-1066).
Knife 1:
Description: The knife remains as the complete blade and tang. The blade is oval in cross-section and triangular in plan with a straight top edge which slopes downwards slightly at the tip. At the other end, the top edge rises to a curve straightening again along the top edge of the tang which also slopes downward slightly. The bottom edge of the blade is angled consistently towards the tip where it sharply curves upwards. At the tang end, the blade meets the tang at a c.45 degree angle. The t…

A probable iron horseshoe. The toe and one branch survive. Although it may be a result of corrosion the outside edge of the shoe appears to be wavy edged. One side of the shoe is flat, the other slightly curved. The remains of round headed nails are seen in possibly two of the holes, which coincide with the shape of the rim. There are other holes, six in total, the one at the end of the shoe being elongated, although these are now filled with corrosion products. The size and the wavy rim suggest an eary medival date for this.
Dimensions: The surviving part of…

An incomplete iron seax of early medieval date (c. 450-600 AD).
Description: The object is mostly complete but worn and remains in five parts of varying size, the largest being the tang and base of the blade. The tang is rectangular in cross-section and gently curved in profile narrowing gradually to its terminal where it expands in height. The blade is heighest just before the downward curving tip but this may be due to wear on the rest of the blade's edges. The object has a dark red, corroded patina with some medium green patching.

Copper alloy and iron sword fragment. The pointed wrought iron tip of a broad-bladed sword, retained within a scabbard chape with a pointed end and an openwork display side with a moulded pattern of interlaced strands discerned between oval holes which are partly blocked by rust extruded from the blade. The back is plainer though a border line appears incised along one descending side. The decoration confers an early medieval appearance on an object whose affinities might more usually lie in the later medieval to early post-medieval periods [see notes below]. Suggested date: Early Medi…

A corroded Medieval or Post-Medieval iron whittle-tang knife blade with an incomplete tang.
The back is flat, and the former cutting edge tends to taper gently and generally in a straight line, disregarding several irregular serrations, from the hilt to about 4 millimetres before the extant tip. From there it tapers more steeply and convexly to meet the back edge. The serrations seem to be a consequence of corrosion and fragmentation rather than an intentional feature.
The tang is broadly rectangular in cross-section and projects from the blade close to the back edge. It tapers in wi…

A largely complete Early Medieval/Viking era iron axehead dating to c AD 800-1000. It is symmetrical, has a sub triangular blade with convex cutting edge and sub rectangular neck and butt (handle end) with an oval 'eye' (opening for the handle), now missing. There are two sets of spurs on each side of the neck (housing for the handle), one pair points upwards, the other down, to add stability to the connection with the handle. There are small sections of these spurs which have flaked away. The axehead is very corroded and with accretions but it seems there w…

An incomplete cast iron trade weight with copper alloy insertion (or outer layer) of early medieval date, c. 900-1100.
This object is an oblate spheroid (flat topped sphere) trade weight with probable Viking association. Weights like this were possibly imported alongside Islamic systems of measurement and appear in excavation contexts in Scandinavia and in England. It consists of an iron core in the shape of a sphere with flattened ends.
There is a copper-alloy element in the flatter end of this object, which is possibly an insertion as coins and other objects are sometimes foun…

A complete probable Early Medieval iron knife dating to circa AD 500-1000. It is a whittle-tanged knife. The tang is rectangular-sectioned and tapers gently from a maximum width of 9.44mm at the junction with the blade to 5.4mm at its terminal. The blade is broadly straight-backed though there is an element of thickening at the shoulder, likely caused by corrosion rather than design. The knife becomes convex curving towards the tip. The cutting edge is slightly curved at the tip from the straight back and gently flares outwards from a width of 7.2mm to the maximum width of the bla…

A gilded, copper alloy and iron object, possibly a dagger or knife pommel, a mount or a shield boss of probable Early Medieval date, about AD 600 - 700. The piece is sub circular in plan with a flat top and domed reverse. It appears to be a flat gilded copper alloy cap over a central iron object. It is not clear how much is missing from the sides. It is decorated with interlaced ribbons which have border lines filled with a row of dots. It appears to be in Salin style II, but in an unusual figure of eight composition, forming a mat that covers …

An iron implement, possibly an Early Medieval socketed spear dating from AD 450 - 1000. It has an open split socket which is U shaped in cross-section and has a square peg hole. The socket tapers to the solid neck which is square in cross-section. The neck continues to taper to a point. It is uncertain if this is a break or whether the object is complete. It is 143.9mm long, 22.7mm wide and 16.4mm thick. 77.9g.
It is unclear whether the pointed end is a break and the object would have continued into a spear head, perhaps one similar to WAW-71A829, or whether this is the intended…

An iron hand bell of probable Early Medieval date, AD 700 - 1100. It has a rounded rectangular opening at the base, and tapers to the top so the two main faces are rectangular and the sides are triangular. It was made by folding a sheet of iron, so there is a seam down the centre of each side. There are two broken projections from the top, which were probably part of a ring handle; one can be seen extending into the inside of the bell too. The clapper is missing. The surface is rusted and has lumps of corrosion. There is no visible copper surface, so it is not possible to say if the b…
