A damaged Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) silver penny of Ecgberht, king of Wessex (802-839), non-portrait type, dating to the period c. 828-839 AD. Minted by Beornehart at the West Saxon mint (probably Winchester). Similar to non portrait-type coin 589 in Jeffrey North's English Hammered Coinage (pg 119, plate 9 no. 25). The coin is broken nearly in half and is fragile but retains the central monogram and half of the lettering. The remaining inscription is clear.
