A post-Medieval lead alloy cut token or 'medalet' of Elizabeth I, probably dating c. 1574 (North 1991:140, ref: 2063). Obverse: No legend; Double-headed eagle within a beaded border. Reverse: B[EATI REGIN]A; Crowned rose all within a beaded border. Diameter: 20.3mm; width: 9.8mm. Weight: 1.30g. DA=12:11. According to North (1991, 140), it is likely that rather than being used as tokens, these objects were probably used as political medalets or counters. A worn and corroded Post-Medieval pewter/lead-alloy token, dating AD 1575-1600, known as a 'Lyon counter'. The obverse depicts the standard lyon token obverse of a rampant lion within a circular banner, surmounted by a crown. Within the banner is the inscription HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE, though the QUI is obscured by the crown. A complete, pewter, Token of Elizabeth I (AD 1558 - AD 1603), possibly dating to the period AD 1574 - AD 1600. Reverse shows a crowned shield, with possible lion rampant, flanked by a pillar topped with a trefoil design on either side of the shield, there is possibly floral spray around the outside of the decoration but this is unclear. The Obverse is difficult to make out due to wear. The legends are illegible. Possible 'Lyon' Series. Possibly North vol 2, p 140, no 2064.
