A silver early medieval coin; a penny of Aethelred II (978 - 1016), First Hand type (979 - 985). The coin is damaged and parts are missing, and what survives is in two pieces. About half of the edge is missing, making the mint and moneyer difficult to identify. The coin is 18.8mm long, 15.7mm wide and 0.6mm thick. It weighs 0.63g. For reference see North number 766, (Figure 1). Wendy Scott suggests that the mint could be Gloucester or Lewes based on the reverse legend probably reading LPE, which could be a blundered LEPE or even LÆPE.

An incomplete Early Medieval silver coin; a penny of Aethelraed II (AD 978 - 1016). First hand reverse type depicting the Hand of God flanked by alpha and omega (probably Variety 1) and dating from about AD 979 - 985. See North number 766, and compare YORYM-91F4B0. The mint and moneyer are mainly illegible; the moneyer's name probably ended in STAN. Only part of the edge of the coin survives, so the legend is only visible between 5o'clock and 8 o'clock on the obverse. The coin is also bent. It is 16mm long, 16.8mm wide and 0.9mm thick. 0.68g.

A silver penny of Aethelred II, First Hand type, N766, 978-985 AD. The coin has been bent to produce an 'S'-shaped profile but shows no sign of plough damage. Martin Allen has added the coin to EMC with the number 2010.0222, and comments that this is the first coin of the moneyer Aelfgar in the First Hand type in EMC, although there are four in SCBI (three of them from this reverse die with the mint name LVNDONI).
