An incomplete Early Medieval silver penny from the reign of Æthelred II (AD 978–1016), first type dating circa AD 979-985. Struck in London by an uncertain moneyer, but potentially Aelfwold. The coin has been clipped, with a section of the rim missing from around 5 o'clock to around 11 o'clock. Obverse description: Diademed and draped bust right. This is an early Medieval hammered silver penny of Aethelred II (The Unready - 978-1016). The coin is from the first hand series c.979-85. The obverse depicts a diademed bust right and the reverse, the hand of Providence issuing from the cloud with A (alpha) and W (omega) to either side. The Moneyer is Herebeorht at Lewes (LÆP). The coin is in a relatively uncirculated condition with a corroded surface and weakly struck reverse.
