An early medieval silver penny of Æthelred II.
The coin is a First Hand type with obverse showing diademed bust right and the legend +ÆÐELRED REX ANG.
The reverse shows the hand of providence issuing from clouds with AW to the sides and the legend + ÐEODGILD MO LIND (Theodgeld moneyer Lincoln mint). North 766.
The coin is complete but has a small area of the flan edge rolled over.
The coin is recorded on the Early Medieval Corpus as EMC number : 2023.0293

Silver coin. A chipped Penny of Aethelred II (978-1016), as kindly identified by the finder with reference to North no. 766 and Spink (nd - 2004 edition consulted by this reporter) no. 1144, issue of 979-985. About one quarter of flan is lost.
Obverse description: Bust draped and diademed right. Initial cross pattee.
Obverse inscription: +EDELREDREXA(--)
Reverse description: Hand (North hand 1) descending flanked by alpha and omega.
Reverse inscription: +TVMME M-OF(ERPI)C - this being finder's reading.
Diameter: 19.8mm, Weight: 1.02gms, die axis: 5
